A big thank you to our speakers for a really engaging discussion yesterday on ‘Your AI readiness and compliance journey’. Here is a snapshot of the event. Janet Taylor-Hall set the scene about facing an era of unprecedented change. She launched our AI readiness toolkit - a comprehensive suite of assessments, roadmaps, and tools designed to prepare legal teams for the transformative journey of AI. This toolkit has been developed because we observed a shift in focus among legal leaders, who are now more interested in getting started with GenAI and getting their teams to use GenAI, rather than just discussing it. Drawing on marketing research conducted by #LegaltechHub, Nicola Shaver addressed the growing emphasis on AI solutions. She highlighted the surge in start-ups, the ease of launching solutions with GenAI, due to technological advancements. She also stressed the importance of organisations to evaluate their tech, address governance / compliance concerns, and understand different AI use models. In Michael Charles Borrelli presentation, he delved into the challenges of regulating AI technology and introduced the EU AI Act which takes a risk-based approach. He mentioned the governance structure for enforcement and emphasised the importance of fundamental rights, data governance, transparency, risk assessment, and ethical principles in AI regulation. He concluded by highlighting the act’s implementation timeline spanning the next 36 months. Our panellists Stephen Albrecht, Nadine Morgan and Nicola Shaver discussed their - involvement in the AI sphere, - approaches to getting their legal teams ready for this change, - approaches to managing obligations in third-party contracts, - applicability of traditional change management in the rapidly evolving landscape - tools and use cases. In the Q&A session, delegates inquired about various aspects of AI implementation and its impact to include: - the outlook and advice on mapping organisational drivers for AI implementation. - training methodologies including the potential use of VR for junior lawyer training. - Collaboration between legal and other departments in implementing AI solutions and sharing best practice. - Long term shifts in the legal ecosystem including changes in pricing dynamic and the role of lawyers. If you are looking to map your AI journey effectively, our AI readiness toolkit provides practical steps to get ready for this shift. Email advisory@cognialaw.com for more information. Kudos to both our UK and Cape Town Cognia Law team members for making this happen. Peter Hall, Justin Ridl, Sonja Celliers (Kuhnert) Mark Boggis Zeenat Ahmad Ciska van Schalkwyk Eve K.
