⚠ More evidence from Internet Watch Foundation (IWF) of the desperate and urgent need for safety by design in the online space to protect the world's children. 🚸 As Childlight - Global Child Safety Institute director of data Professor Deborah Fry argues, the impact of this horrendous behaviour on children and young people, continuing into later adulthood, can include negative mental health, physical health (including cancers, chronic disease and even early death), high-risk behaviours, subsequent violence experienced as both a perpetrator and victim (including domestic abuse and community violence) - AND negative educational outcomes, loss of employment and under-employment. #Childrencantwait
Our CEO Susie Hargreaves OBE, said: “The imagery extorted or coerced from primary school-aged children is now finding its way onto the most extreme, dedicated child sexual abuse sites in shocking numbers. What starts in a child’s bedroom, over a webcam, is shared, traded, and harvested by committed and determined sexual predators. The IWF is seeing the results in unprecedented numbers. These criminals are ruthless." Our data shows a dramatic rise in the number of webpages on the open internet showing children under 10 being groomed, manipulated, or coerced into performing sexually by a predator. 🚨 Today's Police Scotland figures showing a 21% year on year rise in reports of online child sexual abuse and exploitation are horrific but sadly not surprising. ❗ This is a hidden pandemic that has been pushed to the side for far too long because the reality is often too difficult to contemplate. 🤝 It exists because it is allowed to exist. With sufficient will and global co-operation, it is preventable. And in case you missed it, our global analysis which estimates that more than 300 million children a year are affected can be found here https://lnkd.in/edvv8dtg

Not one government is taking the sexual exploitation and abuse of children as seriously as it needs to, Childlight CEO Paul Stanfield tells the Daily Mail’s Jonathan Brocklebank. Nor, he warns, are the big tech companies helping as they prioritise privacy over child safety. https://lnkd.in/ehi2_qVz
