The Hive is a free mental health and wellbeing hub for young people in Camden. We found that young men in Camden faced unique challenges and barriers to engage, so we launched a pilot programme to engage young men who don’t typically receive or access support. Our Young Men’s Project Coordinator holds a caseload of 12 young men offering them creative one to one mental health interventions, and creating a safe space for group work to allow young men to explore their masculinity whilst developing communication skills and expressing emotion. In just the first quarter of the pilot programme, we saw a 120% increase in young men accessing the Hive. 21 group work sessions have taken place, including drop-in sessions and off-site activities such as a music production workshop at the Roundhouse attended by 8 young men. We are pleased to see Liz Kendall, Secretary of State for Work and Pensions, announcing measures closely aligning to our manifesto asks for employability. Yesterday, Liz Kendall MP proposed the implementation of a ‘youth guarantee’ for everyone aged 18-21, which will see more opportunities for training, an apprenticeship, or help to find work offered to all in this age category. Furthermore, merging the National Careers Service and the JobCentre Plus, as well as new work, health and skills plans for the "economically inactive" (people who are not looking for work or available to work) will allow for a more streamlined network of employability support across all sectors of society. Victoria Head (Strategic Director of Employability and Skills at Catch22), responding to the announcement, says: "It's so important to equip children and young people with the skills to ensure they're 'job ready' - and that means starting early, in schools. Combining the National Careers Service and Job Centre Plus is certainly a step in the right direction in helping young people know what careers are out there, and making sure they have the right support to help them get there." In addition, revolutionising the JobCentre Plus to increase support for the economically inactive and support people into careers as opposed to ‘any job’ will ensure sustained development in employability." Victim First Futures is the Children and Young People (CYP) branch of Victim First; a free and confidential service which supports victims and witnesses of crime in Leicester, Leicestershire, and Rutland. "Victim First Futures has been an amazing support to both myself and my 9 year old son. From the outset [our caseworker] listened to my concerns for my son and helped to access the support for him that I was wanting. It has meant everything to me to have regular phone calls to check in on us. She has made me feel safer and more empowered. I cannot thank [our caseworker] enough for all her help." - Service User, Victim First Futures. If you are under 18, live in Leicester, Leicestershire or Rutland, and have been impacted by a crime, you can talk to our dedicated Victim First Futures service: https://ow.ly/On2950SzqjZ
