Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG), consisting of 90% methane, is a widely recognised clean energy source. It offers numerous benefits, ranging from an eco-friendly substitute for coal to a renewable energy source for homes. In a bid to advance cleaner energy in Canada, Cedar LNG emerged as one of the projects in this initiative.🌱 Cedar LNG is a proposed floating LNG facility serving British Columbia, Kitimat, and those within the traditional territory of the Haisla Nation. The vision behind Cedar LNG is to deliver clean Canadian energy by 2028. This renewable energy venture aspires to become one of the world's LNG facilities with the lowest carbon intensity, playing a significant role in replacing coal as a primary energy source in Asia.🌏🔋 Cedar LNG recently announced a positive final investment decision, marking another milestone towards its realisation. The United Nations Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples (UNDRIP) unbinds Indigenous peoples from the chains of colonisation and marginalisation by setting out individual and collective rights of Indigenous peoples, including rights to culture, identity, language, employment, health, education, and many others. Consisting of 46 articles, UNDRIP aims to maintain and strengthen Indigenous peoples' institutions, cultures, and traditions.  This legislation moves the Declaration forward, representing a crucial step in strengthening the Government of Canada's relationship with Indigenous peoples. While UNDRIP is exclusively put together to protect Indigenous peoples, it also has a significant impact on investors who are considering Indigenous investments. Bypassing these rights and obligations can lead to court battles, making it imperative to become familiar with what UNDRIP constitutes. Article 32 or the Free, Prior, and Informed Consent (FPIC) is one of the important articles that investors need to take into account as it is a vital component of ethical investment practices. FPIC states that before any Indigenous investment commences, investors must ensure that Indigenous communities are informed about potential projects. They have the opportunity to consent to or reject the project without the use of coercion or intimidation. Incorporating FPIC into projects requires transparent communication, comprehensive impact assessments, and genuine engagement with Indigenous stakeholders. UNDRIP principles imply that: 🤝Building relationships with Indigenous communities helps develop early and ongoing engagement.  🌍Respecting Indigenous peoples' cultural practices, values, and traditions helps establish cultural sensitivity.  🧭Knowing the Indigenous communities' capacity and limitations provides clear direction on how to approach consultations and negotiations.  📈Incorporating individual and collective rights of Indigenous peoples in investment roadmaps ensures Indigenous communities are involved in receiving equitable benefits from these projects. The Climate Investment Summit, the flagship event of London Climate Action Week supported by World Climate Foundation was held yesterday with LSEG (London Stock Exchange Group) in Paternoster Square in the City of London during London's own mini heat wave! It brought together high-profile public and private stakeholders for stimulating discussions on how to deliver real and effective change in our world. The plenary session was led by Panel Chair Emma Howard Boyd CBE who emphasised the importance of "the lived experience" as the world suffers from 'the tragedy of the commons' as  Gjermund Grimsby of KLP, Norway's largest pension company so aptly put it. Our Co-Chair Mark F. Magnacca 🌍 attended on behalf of the Canadian Indigenous Investment Summit and reinforced how the world is returning to the ethos of Canadian and other Indigenous peoples around the world that people should live in harmony with the natural world, which humanity is part of, not separate from. One of our leading panellists Fred Di Blasio has highlighted the McKinsey & Company study that Canada alone needs to be spending circa $50 bn a year to address climate resilience goals alone by 2030. Indigenous economic reconciliation will be fundamental to whether or not Canada achieves its objectives. As one of the top ten CO2 emitting countries, the importance of doing so, is imperative. Similar to the Climate Investment Summit, the Canadian Indigenous Investment Summit focuses on actionable outcomes, driving real change. According to a Bank of Canada report, an Overview of the Indigenous Economy in Canada, Indigenous GDP is at $48.9 billion in 2020. This shows that with the growing population of Indigenous communities, they are an integral part of Canada's economic prosperity. However, there are Indigenous investment dynamics that need to be strictly followed to achieve economic parity – investors need to recognise their legal obligations and respect Indigenous rights. Responsible investment in Indigenous projects is crucial because investors are not only investing in assets but also in Indigenous peoples. Investing for reconciliation requires a commitment to understanding the laws governing Indigenous communities. From drafting agreements to execution, everything must align with Indigenous sovereignty and their rights. Organisations like the Canadian Council for Indigenous Business (CCIB) provide metrics highlighting four key performance areas for investing in reconciliation: 🏅 Leadership Actions 💼 Employment 📈 Business Development 🌐 Community Relationships Trust and respect are the foundations of successful Indigenous investments. On this National Indigenous Peoples Day, let's take the lessons from "Valley of the Birdtail" to heart. Let's recognise the strides Indigenous communities have made and continue to support their efforts toward growth and equality. Valley of the Birdtail by authors Andrew Stobo Sniderman and Douglas Sanderson narrates a poignant story about a picturesque valley divided by 150 years of racism. The town of Rossburn and the Waywayseecappo Indian reserve depicted disparities and inequalities, revealing bitter truths slowly unveiled in each chapter. It is a story of failure and triumph, entwining racism and reconciliation. 📖 The even-handed narrative serves as an eye-opener for Indigenous and non-Indigenous groups, demonstrating that reconciliation is possible with mutual respect. Seeing Indigenous projects and initiatives leading the way today shows how far Indigenous communities have come. Despite challenges such as financing constraints and infrastructure maintenance, innovation and collaboration have helped Indigenous communities achieve their long-term goals. Looking past the success of these projects, Indigenous-led initiatives have not only improved energy transmission and water systems but have also set a foundation for future growth and resilience in Indigenous communities.: 💼Economic Empowerment: These projects have provided employment opportunities, promoted business development, and generated revenue for Indigenous communities. 🌱Community Development: Infrastructure and resources have demonstrated how Indigenous communities embrace sustainable growth and development. 💰Financial Sustainability: Projects like the Waste-water Treatment Plant have helped Tsawwassen First Nation achieve financial sustainability, ensuring long-term operation without financial strain. 🛠️Infrastructure Improvement: Replacements, repairs, and upgrades have provided Indigenous communities with efficient facilities that will serve them for many years to come. It was a pleasure for our Co-Chairs Rob Brant and Mark F. Magnacca 🌍 to attend a Business Breakfast at Canada House with the Yukon First Nations. This event aimed to economically empower Indigenous communities, promote sustainable practices, and protect cultural heritage amidst modern investment challenges 🌱. As the Deputy Premier, Hon Jeanie McLean noted, the First Nations of the Yukon have always had an economic-driven culture based on an open and valued approach. When the Hudson's Bay Company (HSBC) traders first arrived nearly 200 years ago, they were welcomed and cared for as honoured guests. Knowledge of trails and the environment was freely shared 🌲. The past two hundred years have changed the world of Indigenous Peoples across Canada at a great cost to their culture, livelihood, and lives. It has been a very painful period. Out of such tragedy, there now presents itself an opportunity for economic reconciliation to build a path forward for all 🌅. They are charting a future based on respect, mutual benefit, and meaningful collaboration.
