The September Special Chiefs Assembly will focus on decision-making related to the long-term reforms of the First Nations Child and Family Services Program, where Chiefs and Proxies will have an opportunity to deliberate on and vote on the proposed reforms. Today marks a historic day. AFN National Chief Cindy Woodhouse Nepinak has announced a commitment of $47.8 billion in funding from the Government of Canada for the long-term reform of First Nations Child and Family Services. This commitment has been secured after years of legal challenges and negotiations and significantly higher than the initial commitment of $19.8 billion made by Canada in 2021. The draft settlement agreement will be publicly available to all First Nations Chiefs in the coming days. Following this, the AFN will conduct regional engagement sessions throughout July and mid-September to further discuss the details of the draft settlement agreement. These discussions will be the focus of a Special Chiefs Assembly planned for September 2024, where Chiefs will deliberate and vote on the proposed measures. Ultimately, the direction of the proposed reforms and the settlement agreement will be determined by the Chiefs themselves.
