Last week, in partnership with UK Research and Innovation, we kicked off round two of our flagship Engineering Biology Accelerator Programme with the first of two intensive Bootcamps. This Bootcamp saw the UK-wide cohort of 20 innovators join us at our Old Market incubator to connect with their fellow cohort members and learn from our network of industry-leading partners. The week featured back-to-back training where the candidates received the specialist insight of leading experts across IP, grant writing, entrepreneurial leadership, venture capital, and branding, as we explored key skills needed to found and drive early-stage deep tech companies. The Bootcamp's progress was celebrated with a Meet the Cohort event at our 1023 Bar, where our Accelerator candidates and the wider Science Creates community and partners came together to enjoy nibbles and free-flowing Counter Culture Drinks kombucha. From now until the end of August, Cohort 2.0 will continue to develop their ventures through our hybrid learning programme which will equip them with the skills, knowledge and experience required to turn their EngBio ideas into living, breathing businesses. They will also have the opportunity to return to pitch their companies at our investor showcase event in the autumn. Thank you to our delivery partners, CAIA, Deep Science Ventures, Horizon37 MPA , and SCVC, as well as Abel + Imray, Amino CollectiveCatherine FletcherEdda P., Harry DestecroixJohn Williams and Patrick Page Fallon for supporting us in delivering this Bootcamp. #deeptech #innovation #accelerator #engineeringbiology

Leading people who are not self-aware can be challenging as they tend to: - Dismiss critical feedback - Struggle to empathize with others - Overestimate their contributions - Blame others for failures while taking undue credit for successes However, even though they are likely to be defensive, it is still important for leaders to share critical feedback with them in a timely manner. One tip is to meet people with low self-awareness where they are at and make them feel safe first (e.g., by sharing one positive piece of feedback) before you offer observations of their destructive behaviour. This approach makes them more likely to listen to you than if you start right away with your negative feedback. This requires high levels of emotion management on your behalf as a leader as you will likely feel trigger by their behaviours. #Leadership #SelfAwareness #Feedback #Empathy #Management #Narcissism

We are excited to announce that we have welcomed 20 new innovators to Cohort 2.0 of our flagship Engineering Biology Accelerator Programme! Designed to turn engineering biology ideas into a living, breathing company, Cohort 2.0 of our Programme aims to tackle critical challenges in heart disease, food security, diagnostics, wastewater treatment, sustainable fashion and more, with EngBio at the core of their pioneering technologies. This week, candidates from across the UK join us in Bristol to launch the new programme with a 5-day Founder Bootcamp, priming them with knowledge on grants, technology, pitching, investment, leadership and technology. After this, candidates will be provided with support, training and access to a vast network of expertise over the next 9 weeks. Graduates will then have the opportunity to apply for up to £50k of equity-free feasibility funding for their early-stage deep-tech company, as well as access support from our Programme's globally-leading VC partners. The Science Creates Engineering Biology Accelerator Programme is the only UK-wide accelerator dedicated to supporting entrepreneurial scientists in engineering biology, and it is delivered in partnership with @UK Research and Innovation. We look forward to updating you all as the Programme progresses! #deeptech #startups #innovation #engineeringbiology

As leaders, stress often arises when we're fixated on the future instead of focusing on the present. The pressure of wanting to be somewhere else can pull us away from the here and now, making it hard to manage current challenges effectively. Stay grounded. Focus on what you can control today. By being fully present, you'll reduce stress and make better decisions for your team and organisation. Leadership is about guiding in the moment whilst being intentional about the future. #leadership #authenticity #presence

Giving critical feedback is often challenging for leaders, but it's absolutely essential for growth. Here are two key tips to ensure your feedback is received effectively: 1. Reflect on Your Feedback Style: Consider how you typically give feedback and how it's received. Are you too critical or too lenient? Understanding your natural style can help you balance empathy with honesty. 2. Remember Your Role: Your responsibility is to share constructive feedback, not to control how it's received. Focus on providing clear, actionable insights and allow time for reflection. #Leadership #Feedback #SelfAwareness #GrowthMindset

We all possess blindspots — traits or aspects about ourselves that other people can see but remain unknown to us. Feedback serves as a powerful tool in uncovering these blind spots, offering insights about yourself from alternative viewpoints. The goal of feedback is to bridge the gap between your self perception and others' perspective of you. The clearer this is, the more self-aware and therefore effective you are as a leader. For example: You might perceive yourself as a detail-oriented person, but your team perceives this apparent strength of you as being micromanaging. Or You might think you are just being confident, but others might perceive you as being arrogant. If you don’t uncover your blind spots, you may run into the same issues over and over again and not understand why, hindering your ability to improve. If you want to know what your blindspots are, try asking people around you for feedback. 3 Tips: 1. Seek feedback proactively from diverse people, not just people you ‘like’ 2. Actively seek our negative feedback - how can you grow fast if you don’t know what to improve? 3. Provide challenging feedback to your team - proactively offer specific, actionable feedback delivered with empathy to foster a positive developmental experience. #Leadership #Feedback #SelfAwareness #GrowthMindset #ContinuousImprovement
