B:Music, the music charity responsible for Town Hall and Symphony Hall.

About us

B:Music’s mission is to inspire a love of live music, through performance, participation and learning. B:Music venues Town Hall and Symphony Hall are the centre of Birmingham’s cultural heart – presenting the world’s most exciting and diverse artists, orchestras and bands, including Kraftwerk, The British Paraorchestra of Great Britain, Satinder Sartaaj, Chineke!, Gary Barlow, Joan Armatrading and the world-renowned City of Birmingham Symphony Orchestra. We believe that music is essential to everyone and has the power to transform and change lives, to entertain and uplift, to create shared experiences and to educate. Each year, we programme nearly 800 concerts and events and bring the best jazz, folk, world, roots, classical, rock and pop performers to audiences of over 550,000. Our Jazz programme is a key part of the region’s jazz infrastructure, nurturing new talent and creating performance opportunities, while our Learning & Participation team works with 18,000 people from across Birmingham each year. “That’s when I started to see what music can do. It’s a lifestyle. That’s what this place showed me. It showed me that music is more than just listening. It’s love. It’s appreciation. It’s communication. It’s learning. I thank God for the team at B:Music. If it wasn’t for them, I wouldn’t be here right now. I wouldn’t have had this opportunity." We spoke with Tawananyasha Riley Mamvura, one of the recipients of our B:Music Scholarship, a few days after he and his fellow B:and Together Jazz and Gospel band members took over the Jennifer Blackwell Performance Space. B:Music and PRS Foundation present a collaboration between nu-jazz duo BIGHEADMODE (Robbie & Ewan Moore) and Plumm, a distinguished multi-instrumentalist bandleader based in South London. Together, they have sculpted a captivating suite inspired by the legendary Midlands band, Black Sabbath. The PRS Foundation & B:Music Commission is a unique funded talent development opportunity for Midlands based music creators to develop a new piece of collaborative work. The project aims to showcase two different styles of music coming together, allowing two different audiences to interact and explore sounds they may normally not encounter in a single performance. BIGHEADMODE describe their sound as “1970’s celestial, jazz fusion sounding, groove laced jam, reminiscent of Herbie Hancock’s Mwandishi with flashes of J Dilla and Kruangbin.” Plumm, fiercely proud of her Welsh heritage, creates mood driven soundscapes through her rich vocals to create a sound unlike any other. Using an eclectic range of sounds, both from instruments and vocally, Plumm is inspired by the late greats of David Bowie, Led Zeppelin and Janis Joplin. This seamless fusion intertwines BIGHEADMODE's ethereal, jazz-infused grooves reminiscent of Herbie Hancock's Mwandishi, with echoes of J Dilla and Kruangbin, alongside Plumm's soulful, atmospheric soundscapes inspired by musical luminaries like David Bowie, Led Zeppelin, and Janis Joplin. This musical journey signifies a remarkable exploration into uncharted territories while paying homage to the enduring legacy of Black Sabbath.
