It takes a community to build a community.

About us

Since Sir Lawrie Barratt built his first home near Newcastle in 1958, we have become the nation’s largest housebuilder, with more than 6,000 employees and 29 divisions throughout Britain. As the UK’s most recognisable and recommended housebuilder, our vision is to lead the future of housebuilding by putting customers at the heart of everything we do. We build new homes and neighbourhoods across the country, from Aberdeen to Plymouth, helping to meet housing need in urban and rural areas. We are also leaders in brownfield development and urban regeneration. Wherever we build, we know how much a home matters, so we take pride in creating high quality homes and sustainable places. Our three brands, Barratt Homes, David Wilson Homes and Barratt London offer a variety of properties, from stylish city-centre apartments to luxury detached houses in the beautiful countryside. As well as homes for ownership, we build properties for rent and shared ownership, often working with local authority or housing association partners. We also have a commercial business, Wilson Bowden, which creates spaces from industrial and office buildings to retail and leisure. Oregon, a leading timber-frame manufacturer, underlines our commitment to modern methods of construction. For our current job vacancies, please visit www.barrattcareers.co.uk.

Our ‘Summer of Pride’ 🌈 June was Pride Month, but at Barratt we've continued our celebrations throughout July in our ‘Summer of Pride’. Last Friday, our LGBT+ employee network hosted an 'LGBTea' session, bringing together colleagues, community members, and allies both virtually and in-person. This event provided a community space for our people to connect, sharing experiences and stories. We also invited our people to participate in a ‘Pride Colour Challenge’ by wearing a colour from the Pride flag to show support and solidarity. See pictures of our people taking up the challenge below. #BuildingWithPride

The Barratt Foundation has donated more than £12m to more than 1,000 local and national charities since it launched in 2021.   The Foundation has strong partnerships with national charities including Whizz Kidz, Place2Be, The Outward Bound Trust, Bookmark Reading Charity and Magic Breakfast, all of whom positively impact the lives of children, young people and those most disadvantaged in the communities where we work.   And we continue to support local charities right across the country through the Barratt and David Wilson Community Fund, as well as boosting employee and divisional fundraising efforts for causes that matter most to them.   Andy Button-Stephens, Head of the Barratt Foundation, said: "It has been fantastic to see how the Foundation has grown over the years and together with the amazing fundraising work achieved by the Barratt divisions and its employees, the Foundation will continue to be a force for good, helping people and communities right across the country."

We wanted to share some of the fantastic entries from our colleagues to the Spring edition of our Nature Photography Competition. We work hard to create great places to live, where people and nature can thrive. That's why we started a photography competition earlier this year, with categories covering ‘Around the Home’, ‘On Site’, and ‘Out and About’, giving employees across the country the chance to showcase the great places where they live and work. Thanks to everyone that took part and well done to all of our winners and runners up - and we can't wait to see the entries for our Summer edition!

To address this, we developed a dedicated 'Menopause Support Hub,' to provide our people with easy access to information, and resources. The hub includes a line manager training video featuring our CFO, Mike Scott, and Executive Sponsor for our Gender Equality Network 'Under One Roof', interviewing a specialist menopause GP. It also contains '5-Minute Guides' for managers and employees, educational materials, related policies. We're proud to share that our efforts have been recognised and were shortlisted for two industry awards: 'Best Healthcare and Wellbeing Benefits' by Employee Benefits magazine and 'ED&I Initiative of the Year' by Property Week. Abigail Stevens, an Apprentice Carpenter from our Yorkshire East division, has been awarded the prestigious York Guild of Building Silver Medal at York College's annual awards evening. On the awards presentation, it was noted that "Abi has always shown good motivation and dedication to the course and her apprenticeship. She is a pleasure to teach and shows a keen interest in all that she does. "Often Abi can be found helping other students when they are struggling in their work; and is an example student to her peers and those around her. " HR Director Sally Austin said: “We have a fantastic relationship with York College. The apprenticeship record we have here is absolutely exceptional. “We need more people in the industry and the more we talk about and celebrate role models and ambassadors like tonight’s award winners the easier it will be to attract future generations into the sector."

Kingsbrook, our flagship site for nature, has been described as ‘a game changer for housebuilding’ as it won 'Biodiversity and nature - development project' at the Unlock Net Zero Awards. Developed in partnership with the RSPB and the local council, Kingsbrook will ultimately provide 2,450 new homes alongside over 400 acres of public green spaces, allotments, community orchards and a 250-acre nature reserve. Halfway through construction, it has already delivered nearly 6,000 new trees, hundreds of swift bricks, bat boxes and ecological habitats across the development plus hedgehog highways in every garden. The judges said: “This entry was a standout for the immense array of biodiversity incorporated into the scheme but particularly for setting a new standard for large scale development – this is a game changer for housebuilding.” Jeremy Alden, Technical Director at our North Thames division, said: “We are extremely proud of this accolade and it is a testament to the team’s hard work and dedication to nature, to conservation and our drive to make our developments a special place to live.”

We're delighted to join the industry-led commitment to build more Homes for Nature at our new developments across the country. The Homes for Nature commitment, developed by the industry through the Future Homes Hub, will see participating companies install a bird-nesting brick for every new home built, as well as hedgehog highways as standard on every development taken through planning from September 2024. Twenty homebuilders have signed up to the voluntary commitment so far, and with Swift Awareness Week starting tomorrow, the move represents a step towards providing the minimum of 300,000 nesting bricks and boxes thought to be required to support swift populations and many more bird species across the country. More information on the Homes for Nature commitment, visit: https://lnkd.in/enCBgwtZ #HomesForNature #Biodiversity #SAW2024
