Today involved a lot of reflection on what planners and planning can do to improve diversity and inclusion. Enjoyed being on the POS (Planning Officers Society) 🏳️🌈 Annual Conference panel about diversity discussing what Women in Planning does alongside Helen (Hong) C. from BAME Planners Network, Jenny Offord from Neurodiversity in Planning and Rob Krzyszowski from Planning Out. Thanks to Rob Bristow for the invitation and bringing us together. Followed by a fab launch at Arup for London Legacy Development Corporation for their new toolkit on gender inclusion in planning. Lived experiences and needs can so often differ from the way in which decision makers, developers, contractors, architects, planners, and engineers ‘assume’ people live their lives. So, I’m pleased that Arup University has collaborated with decosm, Social Broadcasts, and residents from marginalised communities in two areas of London to undertake research that explores how communities experience, engage with, and are impacted by the built environment. This formed the basis of two fantastic panel discussions at Arup yesterday which extended way beyond the built form to recognise the multifaceted and interconnected layers of influence which impact peoples experience of the city: Narratives, Agency and Power, Interactions, Spaces and Systems. This collaborative research culminated in a report, Racial Equity and the City, which will be available online soon. This project, and the event last night, highlights the importance and value of collaborating with and listening to communities during the process of shaping a city. Thank you to all our guests for attending the event, which include our fantastic research team: Umi Lovecraft, Neba Sere and Sanaa Shaikh at decosm, Lucia Scazzocchio at Social Broadcasts, Deborah Frimpong and Paizah Malek-Neave - alongside our panellists Kamna Patel, Associate Professor, The Bartlett Development Planning Unit, UCL, Stephen Burns, Executive Director Care, Supported Housing and Inclusion at Peabody, George Mpanga (George The Poet Limited) Spoken Word Artist and Podcaster and finally Helen Fadipe MBE, MRTPI, MBE, MRTPI Vice President of the RTPI, Founder and Co-Chair of BAME Planners Network (who is pictured with me). Finally, a massive thank you to Loraine Martins OBE FRSA (she/her), our Global Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion Director, who hosted this engaging and impactful discussion. #Equity #EDI #SocialValue #InclusiveDesign

It is in this context that the Women and Planning: From Theory to Practice conference welcomes academics and practitioners to come to Leeds, UK and explore this from 1 – 2 July 2024. The conference is kindly sponsored by the Royal Town Planning Institute and supported by ISOCARP - International Society of City and Regional Planners, Commonwealth Women in Planning Network, Women in Planning, Women in Property 📅 Date: 01 Jul 2024 - 02 Jul 2024 📍 Location: Cloth Hall Court, Quebec Street, Leeds, West Yorkshire, LS1 2HA 💵 Prices: Standard fee £150 Student £50 🔗 https://lnkd.in/e_kUY4JN #WAP2024 #womeninplanning #leedsbeckett School of Built Environment, Engineering and Computing @ Leeds Beckett University
