We’ve signed an agreement with Uplift360 on the opening day of The Royal International Air Tattoo to explore a turnkey solution for managing and recycling composite materials from defence equipment. The partnership will also look at recycling high-value composite materials from the UK defence industry that can then be repurposed for other applications through a process known as circular economics. Tom Newman, CEO of our Land business, said: “As a business, we’re committed to reducing our carbon footprint and assisting our customers to achieve their net zero ambitions. “This partnership is an exciting step forward in understanding how we can breathe new life into redundant assets that can be recycled and repurposed before going back into circulation.” Read more: https://lnkd.in/ebEADQAW #RIAT2024 #sustainability #MaterialCircularity

We’ve been awarded a contract extension by the UK Ministry of Defence (MOD) to continue supporting urgent operational requirements for Ukraine’s military land assets. Working side by side with the Armed Forces of Ukraine, we’ll continue to provide vital equipment support services, ensuring their vehicles are available for operations, managing the supply chain and spares and continuing to train the Ukrainian military to conduct the repairs themselves.   David Lockwood, Babcock CEO said: “Ukraine’s military need their critical defence assets to be operational; this contract extension enables Babcock to get vehicles and equipment back onto operations as quickly as possible. Our significant experience and expertise on these platforms, coupled with our understanding of the supply chain, really increases the reliability and availability of these important assets for the Ukrainian armed forces, when they need it most”. Now more than ever, what we do matters. We’ve been steadfast in our support to Ukraine, having performed this role for the last 12 months, we’re proud to be delivering another critical period of support for the Ukrainian armed forces. 🏁 Lights out and away we go! 🏁 Formula Student has kicked into high gear, and we’re thrilled to be right at the centre of the action. Over 100 teams of student and undergrad engineers are putting pedal to the metal as they showcase their incredible skills and innovative designs at this year’s event, demonstrating their engineering and technology expertise as they put their racing cars to the test at Silverstone. As the AI partner, we’ll be working with the teams over the course of the event, at hand to advise on any digital or AI elements they’re developing for their vehicles. Good luck to all the teams – it’s set to be an exciting few days! #FS2024 #STEM #CreatingFutures #ItsWhatWeDo

Last week, 36 aspiring engineers took part in this year’s inspiring ‘Future Engineers’ programme at our Devonport site. The Year 10 students who had come from schools across Plymouth, Devon and Cornwall to take part in the week-long event explored the working world of engineering and defence by getting stuck into a wide range of hands-on activities, including the opportunity to design their own humanitarian vessels. Not only did the experience hone their technical skills, but also fostered teamwork, critical thinking and problem-solving, with students proudly receiving an Industrial Cadet Silver awarded certificate at the end of the programme. Committed to inspiring the next generation of engineers, we’re looking forward to welcoming more young minds to our site in the future. Read more: https://lnkd.in/eRsaR9Yq

We said bon voyage to the Vine Trust charity’s latest medical vessel, MV Lady Jean, which is now being transported to Tanzania following successful sea trials. MV Lady Jean, named by Mrs Sarah Lockwood during the handover ceremony at Portsmouth Historic Dockyard, joined the Jubilee Hope Medical Programme last year to expand the reach of services to remote island communities on Lake Victoria, Tanzania. With significant support from Babcock, the former UK Royal Navy patrol ship has undergone a complete overhaul at Victoria Quay (Gosport), including a new generator, rewiring of electrics, servicing of the engines, installation of new seats and air-conditioning, and painting. The vessel is expected to provide one million medical consultations over the next 20 years. Alun from Babcock’s Support Services business who project managed the conversion activity, said: “After all the combined effort to overhaul the vessel, it is fantastic to see her finally on her way to Tanzania where she will be purposefully employed in a wonderful cause, delivering medical aid to remote communities and improving the lives of those she serves.” Read more: https://lnkd.in/e5fDSNfR

It was lift-off for HMS Active, the Type 31 Inspiration Class frigate, as two major blocks which are part of its modular construction were safely lifted and turned to prepare for integration in our Venturer Building at Rosyth. Double Bottom 03 and Hull Block 05 were on the move, with our Goliath Crane performing the lift and turn of the blocks, ensuring they're ready to go into the purpose-built build hall for integration later this month. This is a fantastic demonstration of our capabilities coming together from across our lifting services, production, engineering, quality and project teams delivering two major block lifts in six days.

Dedicated to helping the services fulfil their duty, we’ve supplied four extreme weather response vehicles to the London Fire Brigade (LFB) to help tackle wildfires in extreme heat. Equipped with a misting system specifically designed to fight wildfires, fire beaters and leaf blowers to control the direction of wildfire travel, these unique vehicles will help reduce the risk of serious fires across heathland areas surrounding the capital. David Reed, Technical Officer on the LFB Fleet contract said: “We’ve been delighted to support our customer LFB by sourcing vital assets and increasing their capability as part of dry weather preparations. In the event of hot weather, frontline stations will be able to make use of the extreme weather response vehicles to reduce the impact of wildfires, helping to create safer communities.
