In Latin America, Amazonia Impact Ventures, a UK-based fund manager that’s ushering loans to women and Indigenous communities in the Amazon for sustainable agroforestry, forest management and biodiversity preservation. Amazonia Impact Ventures is addressing a shortage of affordable debt capital in Indigenous communities and for biodiversity and nature conservation in the Amazon. The UK-based impact fund manager makes sustainability-linked loans to cooperatives that protect forestland and support Indigenous livelihoods. It pairs its capital with technical assistance to help businesses grow revenues while deepening their impact. La semana pasada nuestro Oficial de Inversiones Nelson Torres Balarezo participó en la rueda de negocios de emprendimientos indígenas y en el Foro de Bioemprendimientos, ambos eventos organizados por la Cámara de Comercio de los Pueblos Indígenas del Perú, como parte del Mes del Emprendimiento Indígena. Resultó muy interesante y alentador conocer durante la rueda de negocios más de 20 emprendimientos asociativos liderados por indígenas amazónicos que intentan articularse al mercado y, desde el mismo, mejorar sus ingresos y condiciones de vida. Los bioemprendimientos indígenas son un medio que permite, por un lado, desarrollar actividades económicas en armonía con la naturaleza, desde la cosecha de aguaje hasta la recolección de huevos de taricaya, emprendimientos turísticos, pesca o artesanías. Muchos de ellos se desarrollan en áreas naturales protegidas y son piezas clave para las estrategias de conservación de biodiversidad. Y, por el otro lado, generar ingresos que pueden utilizarse en “..cubrir costos para la educación de nuestros hijos..” o en “..la compra de alimentos que no producimos en nuestras chacras..”. Resultó evidente que el mercado se viene desarrollando de la mano con los emprendimientos. Más de 50 empresas compradoras participaron en la rueda de negocios. Sin embargo, una limitante grave para los emprendimientos indígenas es el acceso al financiamiento necesario, tanto como capital de trabajo como capital para inversiones. El sistema financiero peruano tiene serias restricciones en el acceso al sector indígena. Por otro lado, los inversionistas sociales, por el riesgo y el tamaño pequeño de los tickets, no se enfocan en este segmento. Nuestra amplia experiencia de trabajo con pueblos indígenas nos ha permitido colaborar con organizaciones y comunidades en Perú y Ecuador, las cuáles han recibido financiamiento nuestro para comercializar castaña amazónica, guayusa, aceite de ungurahui, sangre de grado, cacao, café de especialidad, macambo, yuca y plátano. En Amazonia Impact Ventures estamos convencidos que la protección de los bosques amazónicos y su biodiversidad sólo se logrará si más capital es canalizado a los pueblos indígenas. Nuestra propuesta es trabajar con los emprendimientos indígenas a través del financiamiento vinculado al impacto. Es en ese sentido que estamos trabajando bajo una alianza estratégica con la Cámara de Comercio de los Pueblos Indígenas del Perú (CCPIP) para impulsar la economía y emprendimientos indígenas de los pueblos amazónicos, su articulación con el mercado, la revalorización de los conocimientos ancestrales, el acceso a financiamiento y la conservación de los bosques y biodiversidad en los territorios indígenas. Amazonia Impact Ventures was well represented at #socap23 last week with Pajani S., our Co-Founder and Investment Director, and Emil Sirén Gualinga, our Impact Finance Analyst and member of the Sarayaku community of the Ecuadorian Amazon. Both participated in the session: "Investing in Indigenous People and Local Communities to Tackle Climate Change". In this session, we discussed why it is so critical to mobilise capital to indigenous communities now and how to overcome the barriers that hinder investments. We also had the opportunity to share our experience implementing innovative financing mechanisms to improve forest conservation, restoration and livelihoods in the Amazon rainforest. “In order to increase the mobilisation of capital to indigenous peoples and local communities, investors need to adopt a blended finance approach so that risks are reduced, and impact and rewards can be maximised and shared accordingly”.
