“We’re researching a potential new treatment for Alzheimer’s disease. If successful, this could lead to a drug that corrects a process which goes wrong in important brain cells, called neurons. And it could change the ending of dementia, for many more people” Dr Steve Andrews is the Head of Chemistry at our ALBORADA Drug Discovery Institute based in Cambridge. His team have spent months researching this potential treatment, and their plan now is to refine and test a bank of chemical formulations, which could form the basis of a new dementia drug. But to do this, we will need you. So please donate today if you can. And support the next, critical stage of our life-changing research. Donate today: https://lnkd.in/egx9yv7v

“We had a fantastic time participating in Alzheimer's Research UK's Walk for a Cure. As a company working in the life sciences sector, finding a cure for Alzheimer's disease is a cause close to our hearts. The event was excellently organised, and the picturesque route through Kensington Gardens made it a truly enjoyable experience” A team from the life-science and biometric recruitment company, Warman O'Brien, participated in the London Walk For A Cure event in Kensington Gardens on Saturday 8th June. Designed to be an inclusive family-friendly and dementia-friendly event, the team described it as “a fantastic alternative to marathons, allowing our team members to participate alongside their families, including children and older relatives…it was a real pleasure to be a part of it.” For Warman O’Brien, the search for a cure is the reason they’re fundraising; "dementia is the fastest-rising health condition in the UK and the biggest long-term health challenge we face. Investment in research is key to making the breakthroughs we need to deliver life-changing treatments”. They raised an amazing £1801 for dementia research! Well done to all the team and a huge thank you from everyone at Alzheimer's Research UK. Our last Walk For A Cure event of the year is coming up this Sunday 21st July in Cardiff's Pontcanna Fields, there's still time to get your walking boots on and walk for a cure here: https://lnkd.in/e66wd3DF

Back in February we received the incredible news that our partnership with Omaze UK for the Mallorca Superdraw raised a phenomenal £3.1 million! We’re excited to now be able to give you an update on where that money is going... The Omaze Mallorca Superdraw has enabled Alzheimer’s Research UK to launch our Clinical Accelerator Programme. This initiative aims to revolutionise clinical research in the UK, to ensure more people living with dementia are given vital access to participate in clinical trials testing new treatments. We are now taking applications from researchers to apply for funding through our Clinical Research Fellowships, which will help them get the necessary expertise and resources to start new clinical research studies. Why are we funding these Fellowships? Dementia research in the UK has produced invaluable knowledge to help us understand more about the diseases that cause dementia. Now we need more clinical researchers to help turn this knowledge into effective treatments. A big thank you to Omaze and everyone who entered the Mallorca Superdraw, you have made this vital initiative possible. 🧡 To find out more about our Clinical Research Fellowships and how to apply, visit: https://lnkd.in/eqBNqzNk

I’m so proud to announce that Professor Sir John Hardy is joining Alzheimer’s Research UK as our new Vice President. John’s a shining light in our field – especially for his work laying the foundations around treatments that can slow Alzheimer’s disease. This is now more important than ever with the development of two new drugs – lecanemab and donanemab. He’s also been a huge supporter of our work over many years, something we’re really grateful for as the leading UK dementia research charity. His addition to our team will really help our research and clinical trials as well as accelerating our work on early detection. Do join me in welcoming Sir John as our new Vice President by reading my blog and strengthening our mission #ForACure. https://lnkd.in/ejXVn2bd

For almost a decade Hilary Evans-Newton has led Alzheimer’s Research UK, transforming our charity into the leading funder of dementia research in the UK, with a clear vision of what we are here to do: find a cure for all types of dementia. She spoke to Sarah Neville for the Financial Times about the journey 👇

It was fantastic speaking to @SarahNeville at the @Financial Times about my role as Chief Executive of Alzheimer’s Research UK. I joined over a decade ago and in that time the charity has transformed to become the leading funder of dementia research in the UK and Europe. Now we’re firmly leading the charge towards a cure. After witnessing the heartbreak of dementia on my own family this is incredibly important to me and drives me in everything I do at the charity. From when I started Alzheimer’s Research UK has achieved so much, but this hasn’t just been me. As I said in the piece, this is thanks to a brilliant team of people, and a really supportive Board. It’s understanding the power of my team within the organisation, but also the power of our supporters and the research community, that’s helped me deliver. There is still much more work for us to, but I’m excited for what’s ahead and I’m proud to continue to lead Alzheimer’s Research UK during this next chapter. https://lnkd.in/eSuiP246

Wow! 💥 We’re all waking up to news of a Labour landslide in UK politics. We have been promised change. This week’s news from across the pond of the FDA approval of donanemab, the second treatment to be proven effective at slowing the destructive course of #Alzheimer’s disease, shows us what could be possible in the UK. We finally are entering an era where we can reduce the harm and heartbreak of Alzheimer’s disease. But there is much for this new Labour government to do to make this a reality for people with dementia in the UK: 👩🏻⚕️ Alzheimer's Research UK will be calling on them to deliver their manifesto commitment to put Britain at the forefront of transforming treatment for dementia 🧠 we need continued investment in dementia research, including through the Dame Barbara Windsor Dementia Mission 🏥 greater understanding of and focus on dementia across the NHS, NICE and MHRA to ensure we are ready to lead the adoption of new Alzheimer’s drugs so that people can benefit without delay. This morning I feel hopeful. Change begins now. Happy Friday! #foracure 🟧

Last month we held an event bringing together philanthropists, trusts and foundations, and corporate supporters, to share insight into the current picture of dementia research, what the future holds and inspire action as we accelerate progress towards a cure. One of our panelists, was Venture Capitalist Dame Kate Bingham, Managing Partner at SV Health Investors. In 2020, Kate chaired the government's COVID –19 Vaccine Taskforce. Kate shared what finding a cure would mean to her personally, and her belief in Alzheimer’s Research UK and the brilliant researchers we’re funding to get us there. “To find a cure or effective treatments means we can stop Alzheimer’s in its tracks and stop that terrible loss of cognition and the devastating impact on family relationships. “Alzheimer’s Research UK is not only funding basic research to understand the causes of different forms of dementia, but they are also translating those insights into developing new drugs to help patients and their families.” Thank you, Kate, for standing with us in the search for a cure.

“The last two and half years since my mother-in-law, Paula, got diagnosed with Alzheimer’s disease, have been an emotional rollercoaster. “From the tortuous diagnosis journey, through to the ruthlessly progressive effect the disease has had on Paula’s memory, reasoning and thinking, the disease has had a devasting impact on the whole family. Julian Venus’ mother-in-law, Paula, was diagnosed with Alzheimer’s disease. To honour Paula, Julian and his team at Aquarian Cladding Systems Ltd walked the Jurassic Coast and raised an incredible £6,140 for dementia research. 🎉 The team took on this amazing challenge as they strongly believe that funding dementia research is vital in leading us to a cure. “Research is key in the search for a cure, so that in the future, other people and families don’t have to experience the devastating effects of Alzheimer’s disease.” Thanks Julian Venus and the team for truly going the distance in your support of dementia research! 🧡 If you’re inspired by the teams’ incredible efforts join us this September in #WorldAlzheimersMonth and take on the Jurassic Coast challenge 👇 https://lnkd.in/e2q4zeCc
