Following on from the King’s Speech last week and the announcement of the Skills England Bill, this week started with the launch of Skills England on Monday. Skills England itself should be fully established by the summer of 2025, in the interim the spadework and early hard yards start now with the creation of a Shadow Skills England body with Richard Pennycook CBE being announced as interim chair. Yesterday I was delighted to meet the new team tasked with leading Shadow Skills England. It was a positive initial meeting and very welcome that AELP was on the short list of key stakeholders to meet with so soon after it launched. The public narrative has been that training providers will be a key part of Skills England and as you can imagine that is something we have laser focus on ensuring that actually happens. ITPs have been the engine room driving the success and growth of work-based learning and will be key in making work pay and delivering the economic growth that the economy urgently needs. #SkillsEngland #Apprenticeships #GrowthAndSkills #SkillsMeansGrowth #AskAshworth AELP #Devolution #LocalGrowthPlans #OpportunityMission

We welcome the decision to pause and then review plans to defund qualifications at Level 3 and below, collectively called for by AELP and the other main sector representatives bodies. There is a degree of urgency over this – concluding this review by the end of the year is ambitious but necessary so that learners and providers understand where they stand. The proposals to remove the majority of Applied General and BTEC qualifications to ‘clear the decks’ for T Levels was completely arbitrary, would reduce learner choice, leave large gaps in provision and significantly impact the most disadvantaged learners.
