OIS supports the Institutional Review Board's commitment to research by working to protect the rights and welfare of human subjects who participate in OSU-administered research efforts. Because many of these research projects utilize protected data, OIS is tasked with reviewing all Level 3 project data security plans.

The IRB Application Process

  • Submit your application:

    • Researchers must submit an IRB application for review before conducting research involving human subjects. The application should include a detailed description of the study, including its purpose, methodology, and the potential risks and benefits to participants.

  • IRB review:

    • The IRB will review the application to ensure that the study meets the criteria for ethical research. This includes ensuring that participants are fully informed about the study and have given their voluntary consent to participate. The IRB will also evaluate the risks and benefits of the study and determine whether they are acceptable.

  • Modifications and resubmissions:

    • If the IRB identifies any issues or concerns with the study, it may require modifications before approving the application. The researcher will need to make the necessary changes and resubmit the application for further review.

  • Approval:

    • Once the IRB approves the application, the researcher may begin the study. The researcher must also submit annual reports to the IRB to ensure that the study continues to comply with ethical standards.
