Last week the 1st Africa Social and Behavior Change (SBC) Virtual Summit took place (2-4 July, 2024) and I have had the honor to participate as the Egypt Country Chapter Lead for AS-SBC. Speakers from all around Africa and around the world convened to discuss, explore and share the latest SBC knowledge and experience with a local African context. Egypt 🇪🇬 had a strong representation starting Day 0: (Pre- Youth summit) with our youth Farah Korayem being the overall facilitator for the day, then on Day 1: Dina Heikal (Social and Behavior Change Specialist, UNICEF Egypt) giving her keynote speech diving into “UNICEF’s pathway towards the institutionalization of SBC, successes, challenges, and lessons learnt” along side Massimiliano Sani (Senior Advisor, Social and Behavior Change, UNICEF HQ) and on Day 2: Mostafa Mamdouh; Social and Behavior Change Communication Director at JSI Egypt giving his presentation “Empowering Youth Voices in Family Planning and Reproductive Health”. Job well done by all 👏 👏 👏 My Key takeaways: 1. Prioritizing collaboration across disciplines to achieve sustainable and impactful social and behavior change. 2. Advocating for long-term programmes rather than short term projects as Kojo Lokko has mentioned in his keynote speech. My due thanks to the African Society for Social & Behavior Change (AS-SBC) secretariat and team for their relentless effort to bring together SBC practitioners and academics from diverse backgrounds across three consecutive days from all over Africa! What does behavior change require? -a systematic and evidence based approach -it requires us to look at the models, theories and frameworks and see which ones will make the most sense for the projects we are working on -it requires us to frame the challenge or opportunity in behavioral terms and to make sure we are accounting for the context in which we are working on -it requires us to understand the needs -it requires us to take into account factors like culture -it requires us to create a thorough analysis of the drivers of the behaviors and related behaviors we are working on (using a behavioral model) -it requires us to go beyond the individual and to account for the system -it requires us to select techniques and strategies that are backed by evidence -it requires us to mix methods and to borrow and draw from other disciplines like design, so we can translate the strategies into proper solutions -it requires us to evaluate and account for unintended consequences If you want to learn to design for behavior why not take Robert Meza course: https://lnkd.in/e9vQvuDG Get 20% off with code: STUDENT20
