Our website won in the category "Publishing and Media" at the national Web Awards UA. This is an all-Ukrainian competition for websites and mobile applications that has been held since 2017. ⠀ “We had planned to update the website before the full-scale invasion, but then priorities changed. The entire team was involved in the emergency rescue of Ukrainian media and journalists. However, in 2023, thanks to our cooperation with Element Agency, we managed to improve the internal and external content of the platform,” says Dara Franko, Lviv Media Forum's communications manager. ⠀ We have been working with this Ukrainian digital agency for many years. Initially, Element Agency helped us only with technical support, but later they took on a full upgrade. I'm glad that within the framework of the X LMF conference, we were able to present the results of six months' work by the Lviv Media Forum - the study "Donor Support Landscape for Media in Ukraine," which we implemented with the support of the International Media Support. We believe this study is valuable because it provides an understanding of how this field operates, who the main players are, who most frequently receives grants, how support programs for Ukrainian media are formed, and what both sides of the process, both media and donors, would like to improve or change. In my opinion, this research will be useful for both donors and the media. Secondly, because we have compiled a comprehensive list of donor organizations supporting media in Ukraine. I would like to thank the authors of the study for their thoroughness and inclusiveness in the process. And thanks to those who attended the presentation in person. On 16 May, the X LMF anniversary conference started in Lviv. The event was opened by the head of Lviv Media Forum Olga Myrovych: ⠀ “Today, as hundreds of millions of citizens choose their representatives to parliaments and governments around the world, journalists face a great professional challenge. The anniversary X LMF starts in 24 hours 🔥 The program of this year's conference is formed by two streams: Common Language and Common Sense. Focus topic: “Common Language for Common Sense: Search For Meaning in Polarized World". Over three days, the speakers and participants will work together to find common language and define the role of the media, civil society, international organisations, national authorities, diplomats and other stakeholders in this search. The participants will take part in workshops, discussions, public interviews, presentations and masterclasses. The keynote speakers at the conference will be Oleksandra Matviichuk and Gayatri Chakravorty Spivak. They will deliver their speeches on 16 May. X LMF will bring together media professionals from 36 countries Since 2013, LMF has been the largest conference about media and for media professionals in Eastern and Central Europe. Last year, we changed the format and focused on the issues that are critical to international support for Ukraine in a time of great war. ⠀ The official registration for the conference finished on 1 May 2024. Why are we organising the X LMF conference in time of war? ⠀ In short: because we believe that our ability to create a common context for people and environments can bring the greatest benefit to Ukraine. ⠀ For us, LMF is not a party or entertainment. Eleven years ago, this conference was created as a platform for dialogue between Ukrainian and foreign media. After Russia's full-scale invasion, this mission has become even more important, because it is no longer just about sharing experiences, cooperation and networking, but also about encouraging the world to support Ukraine. ⠀ For some of the speakers and participants, this will be their first visit to Ukraine. They will be able to see with their own eyes what they have read and heard about in the media, including the consequences of a rocket attack on a residential building next to the shelter where we are holding the conference. They will also be able to talk directly to Ukrainian journalists and hear their stories about their work during the war. ⠀ We are not trying to scare or move foreign guests, but we hope to show and make them feel what Ukraine is fighting for and why giving up our land to ‘appease the aggressor’ is not an option. ⠀ In 2024, the conference will be held on 16-18 May. Oleksandra Matviichuk is the head of the Center for Civil Liberties, which received the The Nobel Prize in 2022; she is a human rights lawyer and one of the main speakers at the LMF 2024. ⠀ During her speech, Oleksandra will talk about the importance of (re)defining key concepts in the language we use to talk about war and peace. Two threads and something special: how the LMF 2024 program is built ⠀ You have already seen the program of the LMF anniversary conference, which we are preparing to hold on 16-18 May in Lviv. The second and third days are divided into two threads — Common Language and Common Sense. The threads' titles echo the conference's focus theme — “Common Language for Common Sense: Search For Meaning in Polarized World”. ⠀ Common Language is a thread that will feature more worldview discussions and public interviews. It will focus on the strategies of Ukraine's victory in the war for independence, the influence of the media on shaping historical memory, the changes that the current war is bringing to the ethics and practices of journalists, and understanding in times of polarization. ⠀ Common Sense is a more practical thread where people will share experiences and look for solutions. We will talk about counteracting pressure on journalists, the use of artificial intelligence in media work, the impact of technology platforms on the polarisation of society, mental health and psychological support for media professionals, etc. We will also present the new work of the LMF research team. ⠀ The conference will also feature thematic special events organised jointly with our partners.
