News and Updates
SSHRC Insight Grant Competition
A reminder that SSHRC has opened applications for the October 2024 Insight Grants competition.
Interested applications are encouraged to reach out to the Research Facilitators as early as possible for the internal deadline.
The Insight Grants support research excellence in the social sciences and humanities. Project budgets must be between $7,000 and $400,000. The project length can be anywhere from two to five years.
Applicants choose from one of two streams, depending on the amount of funding required.
- Stream A for requests between $7,000 and $100,000; or
- Stream B for requests between $100,001 and $400,000.
Both streams will be adjudicated by the same committees and will receive the same rigorous level of merit review. The deadlines and application process are identical for both; however, the targeted success rate for Stream A is higher than for Stream B.
SSHRC welcomes applications involving Indigenous research, as well as those involving research creation.
For more information regarding the application and eligibility requirements, please refer to the website.
The Office of Research and Innovation is offering a hybrid information session regarding the Insight Grants on August 20th from 1:00 pm – 2:30 pm. For questions and to register, contact Breanne Whitwell.
NZ-Canada Horizon Europe Cluster 5 webinar – July 30th!

This webinar will dive into upcoming Cluster 5 calls on climate, energy and mobility, which close on January 21, 2025. It will also provide opportunities to connect researchers in both countries who have indicated shared interest on exploring collaborations with a focus on cluster 5. It will also include a presentation on best practices by National Contact Points from Canada and New Zealand.

APC Discounts for Open Access Publishing
A reminder that Trent researchers have access to article processing charge (APC) discounts through our participation in publishing agreements negotiated by the Canadian Research Knowledge Network (CRKN).
Through a read-and-publish agreement negotiated by CKRN—effective from January 1, 2024, to December 31, 2026—Trent authors can publish open access in over 1,800 hybrid Elsevier journals at no cost, as well as receive partial APC discounts on gold journals. By leveraging the collective negotiating power of CRKN's 73 member institutions, the Trent Library is supporting the Canadian research community and ensuring that research funding is dedicated to advancing knowledge rather than covering publishing costs.
Details and instructions on accessing these benefits can be found in the Library’s Open Access Publishing Guide.
