Lesson 12 – how to talk about your plans for the future

Moien alleguer and welcome back for your weekly dose of lëtzebuergesch! You may remember that in the last lesson, we learned how to tell someone an anecdote or past experience in Luxembourgish. But in the spirit of not dwelling in the past for too long, it is only appropriate that this week, we focus on the future…

As this is Lesson 12, we can only assume that you know the drill by now: Below you'll find several useful words and phrases to help you talk about the future in Luxembourgish. Remember that these lists are by no means exhaustive. Think of them more like a jumping-off point, a sort of linguistic appetiser, meant to get you excited about what else there might be to discover.

Defining the future you're talking about

First of all, let's equip you with the right words to narrow down the exact point in the future you are talking about:

Tomorrow -> Muer

At the end of the week -> Enn der Woch

Next weekend -> Nächste Weekend

Next *weekday* -> Nächste(n) *Wochendag*

Next week -> Nächst Woch

Next month -> Nächste Mount

Next year -> Nächst Joer

In two / three / four days / months / years -> An zwee / dräi / véier Deeg / Méint / Joer

Eventually -> Iergendwann

Useful phrases

Below are some more general phrases that can come in handy when talking about future events in Luxembourgish:

In the near future -> An noer Zukunft

Sooner or later -> Fréier oder spéider

For the time being -> Fir de Moment

One day -> Enges Daags

Once I… -> Soubal / Wann ech…

I plan to… -> Ech plangen…

If everything goes well… -> Wann alles gutt geet…

I am already looking forward to… -> Ech freeë mech schonn op…

I can hardly wait for… -> Ech kann et kaum erwaarde bis…

It's (not) looking good for… -> Et gesäit (net) gutt aus fir…
