An Indian-origin man Sojan Joseph, member of Labour party, won the Ashford, south-eastern England, constituency in the recent general election of the UK.
The 49-year-old mental health nurse successfully challenged the Conservative stronghold of Ashford in Kent, south-eastern England, by connecting with voters and pledging to improve mental health services in his constituency.
Joseph's victory also dealt a blow to the anti-immigration rhetoric of right-wing candidates in a seat where the far-right Reform UK came in third place, PTI reported.
In his acceptance speech, Joseph expressed his gratitude and commitment, stating, "I am humbled with the trust you all placed in me and fully aware of the responsibilities that come with it. I will work hard for everyone in Ashford, Hawkinge and villages."
Experience as a local councillor and a BAME Officer, Joseph believed that these role has prepared him for this new parliamentary role. However, he believes that his more than two decades of experience as a mental health nurse in the NHS provides him with the empathy needed for his new position.
Additionally, his strong connection with the local communities of Ashford, where he has lived with his family for over 15 years, serves as an additional motivation.
In a post on X, Joseph said, "Thank you for the honour of being elected as the first Labour MP of Ashford constituency. I am humbled with the trust you all placed in me and fully aware of the responsibilities comes with it. I will work hard for everyone in Ashford, Hawkinge and villages. Thank you to all in the Labour Family and the Campaign Team for their support."
