NEW DELHI: Erung Tenzing Lepcha of Sikkim Krantikari Morcha has won the Rinchenpong seat, having polled 9624 votes.
Rinchenpong, a vital assembly constituency of Sikkim, nestled in the northeastern part of India, is reserved for members of the Bhutia-Lepcha community. Over the years, it has remained a significant part of the Sikkim Lok Sabha constituency, reflecting the socio-political landscape of the region.
In the 2019 Sikkim Legislative Assembly elections, Karma Sonam Lepcha of the Sikkim Democratic Front (SDF) emerged victorious with 6,582 votes, constituting 52.24% of the total votes.Phurba Tshering Bhutia of the Sikkim Krantikari Morcha (SKM) secured 5,513 votes, capturing 43.76% of the votes. Similarly, in the 2014 elections, Karma Sonam Lepcha of the SDF secured a landslide victory with 7,347 votes, accounting for 68.37% of the total votes.
The political scenario in Rinchenpong is shaped by various factors, including local issues, party alliances, and candidate profiles. The dominance of the SDF in this constituency since the 1994 elections underscores its stronghold and influence in the region.
Amidst this backdrop, the SKM, Led by chief minister PS Tamang, released its manifesto for the 2024 assembly and Lok Sabha polls. The manifesto, centered on nine guarantees for social uplift, promises dignity, capability, good governance, education, health, empowerment, pride, prosperity, and social equality. This manifesto reflected the party's commitment to addressing the pressing needs and aspirations of the people of Rinchenpong and Sikkim at large.

The 2024 assembly elections, held concurrently with the Lok Sabha elections on April 19th, witnessed a significant voter turnout of 83.83%. Key candidates contesting for the Rinchenpong assembly seat include Sancho Lepcha from the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), Erung Tenzing Lepcha from the Sikkim Krantikari Morcha, Dawa Ongdi Lepcha from the Citizen Action Party-Sikkim, and Norden Bhutia from the Sikkim Democratic Front.
