Barfung Assembly Election Result 2024: SKM's Rikshal Dorjee Bhutia defeats SDF's Baichung Bhutia to secure seat

NEW DELHI: Sikkim Krantikari Morcha's Rikshal Dorjee Bhutia emerged victorious from Barfung constituency with 8,358 votes. He defeated SDF's Baichung Bhutia who secured 4,012 votes.
Barfung Assembly constituency, nestled in the verdant landscapes of Sikkim, stands as one of the 32 assembly constituencies in the state. Notably, this constituency is reserved for members of the Bhutia-Lepcha community, reflecting the state's commitment to inclusive representation.
In the 2019 Sikkim Legislative Assembly elections, Tashi Thendup Bhutia of the Sikkim Democratic Front emerged victorious with 5,936 votes, capturing 49.13% of the total votes.Close on the heels was Lobzang Bhutia of the Sikkim Krantikari Morcha (SKM) with 5,839 votes, constituting 48.32% of the votes. Similarly, in the 2014 elections, Dorjee Dazom Bhutia of the SDF secured victory with 6,639 votes, commanding a significant 63.79% of the total votes, while Pema Wangyal Bhutia of the SKM garnered 3,460 votes, accounting for 33.24% of the votes.
Noteworthy among the candidates in the 2024 elections is former India footballer Bhaichung Bhutia, contesting from the Barfung (BL-Reserved) seat on behalf of the Sikkim Democratic Front (SDF). His candidacy adds a unique dimension to the electoral landscape, resonating with the aspirations of the community.
Amidst the democratic exercise, Barfung witnessed a substantial voter turnout of 82.39% during the 2024 elections, underscoring the electorate's active engagement in the electoral process. Major candidates vying for the Barfung assembly seat in the 2024 elections included Dadul Lepcha from the Citizen Action Party-Sikkim, Rikshal Dorjee Bhutia from the Sikkim Krantikari Morcha, and Tashi Dadul Bhutia from the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP).
