NEW DELHI: Salem is one of the 39 parliamentary constituenies in Tamil Nadu. It encompasses six legislative assembly seats: Omalur, Edappadi, Salem West, Salem North, Salem South, and Veerapandi.

In the 2014 elections, AIADMK candidate V. Pannerselvam claimed victory with 556,546 votes. DMK candidate S. Umarani secured the second position with 288,936 votes.
Vote share of major political parties in previous Lok Sabha elections: In the 2019 general elections for the Salem constituency, the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) secured 48.29% of the votes, while the All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (AIADMK) obtained 36.59% of the votes.
In the 2014 general elections, the AIADMK led with 48.38% of the votes, followed by the DMK with 25.12% of the votes. The INC secured 4.04% of the votes, and the DMDK obtained 17.50% of the votes.
