Maha Vikas Aghadi outperformed Mahayuti in 42 of Vidarbha’s 62 assembly constituencies
NAGPUR: The Maha Vikas Aghadi (MVA) has emerged as the dominant force in Vidarbha by securing leads in 42 out of the region’s 62 assembly constituencies. The MVA, consisting of Congress, Shiv Sena (UBT), and the Sharad Pawar faction of NCP, outperformed the Mahayuti alliance, which includes the BJP, Shiv Sena, and NCP, which managed to get a lead in only 20 constituencies.

This electoral outcome marks a dramatic reversal from the 2019 polls, when the BJP and the undivided Shiv Sena dominated Vidarbha, winning nine seats. The Congress had only managed to secure the Chandrapur seat back then, largely due to public dissatisfaction with the BJP government’s liquor prohibition policy. The current results highlight the MVA’s resurgence and the electorate’s shift in preference.
As per poll analysts, the MVA has a lead in about 70% of these 62 constituencies while Mahayuti was ahead in 30%. The MVA's success is particularly notable in several key constituencies where its candidates led in all six assembly constituencies, resulting in their massive wins over the Mahayuti candidates.
In Chandrapur, Congress candidate and Warora MLA Pratibha Dhanorkar delivered a significant blow to BJP’s state forest minister Sudhir Mungantiwar, winning by a margin of over 2,60,000 votes. Similarly, in Gadchiroli, Congress’s Namdeo Kirsan defeated two-time MP Ashok Nete by more than 1,40,000 votes. The Ramtek constituency also saw a decisive victory for the MVA, with Congress candidate Shyamkumar Barve defeating former Umred MLA Raju Parwe, who had switched to the Shiv Sena, by over 76,000 votes.
