IMPHAL: A five-month-old bridge over the swollen Imphal river at Mutum Phibou in Manipur's Imphal West district collapsed Sunday morning, taking down with it a firewood-laden truck and four occupants, one of whom died. The accident, which occurred within weeks of villagers complaining to a visiting minister of defects in the structure.
In Jharkhand, the girder of an underconstruction bridge over Arga river at Bhelwaghati in Giridih district collapsed late on Saturday night owing to incessant rain.
The bridge in Jharkhand was being constructed on Fatehpur-Bhelwaghati road to connect Dumritola and Karipahri villages. Residents said water level in the river rose significantly following downpour on Saturday.
In neighbouring Bihar, a bridge collapsed on Friday in Madhubani due to heavy rain, making it the fifth such incident in nine days. Another had collapsed in Kishanganj on Thursday.
