Panaji gets over 35cm rain on Goa’s wettest day of season
Panaji: With Goa recording a total of 235mm rainfall in a single day, July 8 emerged as the wettest day this season. Earlier, this season’s wettest day was June 8, when 95.1mm of rainfall was recorded within 24 hours.
In Sunday’s deluge that prompted a red alert from the IMD, all rain gauge stations across Goa recorded over 100mm of rainfall within 24 hours.
Panaji recorded 360.8mm within 24 hours, followed by Old Goa with 333.8mm. The lowest was recorded at Quepem (175mm).
The IMD on Monday issued a red alert for the second consecutive day. Between 8.30am and 5.30pm on Monday, Old Goa recorded 31mm rainfall, while Panaji recorded 23mm during this period.
The adverse weather conditions also impacted marine life along the Goa coast. At Arambol, lifeguards rescued a turtle entangled in discarded fish nets. In Betalbatim, three turtles were rescued, while an Olive Ridley Turtle was found dead at Benaulim.
Ferry operations along the Pomburpa-Chorao route were temporarily halted for an hour on Monday as the river swelled due to heavy rainfall.
The IMD has issued an orange alert for Goa on July 9, indicating heavy to very heavy rainfall with strong surface winds at isolated places.
From July 10 to 12, heavy rainfall exceeding 64.4mm in 24 hours is expected at isolated places in both districts and intense rainfall spells are anticipated, accompanied by strong surface winds gusting up to 50kmph.
