How is trust built? What is trust? In my Leadership training sessions, I use a formula for trust: Trust=Credibility×Reliability×Intimacy/Self-Orientation This formula was developed by David H. Maister in his book "The Trusted Advisor." Let's break it down. Credibility is about words—what you say—as well as your competence, expertise, and legitimacy. Do I believe what you are saying? Reliability is about the consistency of actions and behaviors over time. It's about saying what you do and doing what you say. Intimacy is about creating a connection, a relationship of confidentiality, mutual respect, and empathy. Self-orientation, or ego orientation, is inversely proportional to trust. A lower self-orientation means the person is seen as altruistic and focused on the needs and desires of others. In my view, there also needs to be some degree of self-orientation to avoid completely losing oneself in the needs and desires of others. Knowing and respecting your own desires and boundaries is fundamental to interacting with others in a balanced way. Trust is the foundational brick in any relationship, whether personal or professional. With trust, you can build together and for the long term. The busier, more tired, and overwhelmed we become by the number of actions, promises, and commitments, the more reliability suffers. We end up making commitments we cannot fulfill. And it’s not because we don’t want to or lack the necessary competence, but because there isn’t enough physical, energetic, and emotional space. I have been in this situation many times. I’ve made promises for meetings, projects, conversations, and activities that I didn���t accomplish. I’ve disappointed people with last-minute cancellations, not once but multiple times. I’ve even reached burnout because I didn’t know how to say "no." I was so optimistic about the time I needed to accomplish my tasks and didn’t consider preparation times, recovery and recharging space, breaks, healthy sleep, and time to just be and do nothing. Now, I’m learning to take my time, make fewer promises, and commit only where I know I can follow through. It’s not easy for me—a recovering people pleaser. It means saying no, setting boundaries, and sometimes disappointing others in a different way. But I realize I prefer to say I can’t do X or that I’ll try but can’t promise, rather than saying yes and then canceling. I greatly appreciate those who respect and live by this. For me, it is now tied to integrity with my values, being authentic, and honest with myself and others. So, I wish for you to calibrate with your own truth about what you can realistically do, considering your needs and those of others, in such a way that you demonstrate reliability and trust every day. Being the leader of your own life means first knowing yourself and being able to count on yourself.

Intoku (陰徳) - Good Deeds Done In Secret I am such a fan of Japanese words that convey much bigger concepts than a simple word and often can be so powerful, beautiful or insightful. Good examples include Kaizen (改善) (continuous improvement), Kintsugi (金継ぎ) (the art of fixing with gold), and Tsundoku (積ん読) (the act of acquiring books and letting them pile up, unread). Intoku is the newest word to add to my list, shared with me by the ever-inspiring David Hieatt. As we consider the role that men can play in being better allies to women and other historically marginalised groups, it’s important that we don’t force people to always shout about what they are doing to become better allies. I sometimes feel the need to justify my work by sharing some of the things I do in the background, but then I realise that sometimes good deeds need to be done in secret. It’s why it’s important that before you judge someone by their cover, it’s worth considering that there may be many pages inside you have just not seen. It still amazes me to see some of my peers being called performative when I know just how much work they do in the background to support others. Additionally, I appreciated the words from Bano Sheikh this morning, who said, “Not every man has to be influential to create systemic change. Every man has the ability to provide support to their partner, their friend, or their colleagues to help them succeed.” Sometimes, making a big difference to those around you can make a huge difference to many other people. #Intoku #MaleAllyship #BeingGood #Kindness #InclusiveLeadership

Resistance to change originates under two scenarios. First, if the change threatens employees’ primary needs, such as security and safety, they’ll clutch onto the old ways of doing things, no matter how persuasive the information is to change. Second, employees will resist change if they are satisfied with the current situation. #change

Attention Leaders!! Over the years, studied and used various theories of Leadership as Head of L&D, in 30 plus years of my career. I am sure many participants have been benefitted in their careers. Some of the theories like, the 𝐇𝐞𝐫𝐬𝐞𝐲 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐁𝐥𝐚𝐧𝐜𝐡𝐚𝐫𝐝 𝐒𝐢𝐭𝐮𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧𝐚𝐥 𝐋𝐞𝐚𝐝𝐞𝐫𝐬𝐡𝐢𝐩 𝐭𝐡𝐞𝐨𝐫𝐲. This theory is about tasks and relationships, confidence, maturity, behavioral influences on a situation. Assess, then delegate, (you have a smart one there) or participate (will need some cajoling) or sell (needs a push) or simply tell (or they are not going to do it at all). Please read 𝐅𝐢𝐞𝐝𝐥𝐞𝐫’𝐬 𝐂𝐨𝐧𝐭𝐢𝐧𝐠𝐞𝐧𝐜𝐲 𝐓𝐡𝐞𝐨𝐫𝐲 that talks about leaders and followers. 𝐏𝐚𝐭𝐡-𝐆𝐨𝐚𝐥 𝐋𝐞𝐚𝐝𝐞𝐫𝐬𝐡𝐢𝐩 𝐓𝐡𝐞𝐨𝐫𝐲 states leaders to adapt to strengths and weaknesses of their followers. The three theories jive very well together.  We know about the 𝐊𝐮𝐫𝐭 𝐋𝐞𝐰𝐢𝐧 𝐭𝐡𝐞𝐨𝐫𝐲 𝐨𝐟 𝐁𝐞𝐡𝐚𝐯𝐢𝐨𝐫𝐚𝐥 𝐋𝐞𝐚𝐝𝐞𝐫𝐬𝐡𝐢𝐩, Autocratic, Democratic and Laissez-Faire styles of leaders. I recollect, assessing and judging our political leaders with this compass all the time! From 𝐌𝐜𝐆𝐫𝐞𝐠𝐨𝐫’𝐬 𝐓𝐫𝐚𝐧𝐬𝐟𝐨𝐫𝐦𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧𝐚𝐥 𝐋𝐞𝐚𝐝𝐞𝐫𝐬𝐡𝐢𝐩, we have adopted this style in Coaching. Moving a client from being 𝐓𝐫𝐚𝐧𝐬𝐚𝐜𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧𝐚𝐥 𝐭𝐨 𝐓𝐫𝐚𝐧𝐬𝐟𝐨𝐫𝐦𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧𝐚𝐥, is every Coaches dream! Holding the Coaching space is critical here! Add 𝐀𝐮𝐭𝐡𝐞𝐧𝐭𝐢𝐜 𝐋𝐞𝐚𝐝𝐞𝐫𝐬𝐡𝐢𝐩 𝐌𝐨𝐝𝐞𝐥 here, building on self-awareness, credibility, without bias, emotional attachments, and still make smart decisions, to this theory.  The 𝐈𝐧𝐧𝐨𝐯𝐚𝐭𝐨𝐫’𝐬 𝐃𝐢𝐥𝐞𝐦𝐦𝐚, spoke about disruption, thinking beyond the status-quo, making this an important trait for a Leader. 𝐂𝐥𝐚𝐲𝐭𝐨𝐧 𝐂𝐡𝐫𝐢𝐬𝐭𝐞𝐧𝐬𝐞𝐧 made leaders to re-look at their processes, values, question the status-quo to creating simple, convenient, accessible, and affordable, practices, disrupting the complexities of the 90s. Research continues to evolve in areas of cognitive, complexity, cross-cultural, diversity, shared leadership, and especially the New Generation, X, Y, Z and post-Covid, remote leaders. What raised the need to speak on leadership theories, today?  𝐂𝐥𝐢𝐞𝐧𝐭 𝐜𝐚𝐥𝐥! They wanted their Leaders to move to the next level. Organization objectives, growth plans, previous trainings, (important to know, if the org is grooming their leaders), current and future targets, KRAs, KPIs and the discussion was endless. Upon reviewing all the above theories, I settled for the 5 Levels of Leadership, that encompasses all the above theories. The Leader initially assesses their current leadership style and lets the 𝐋𝐞𝐚𝐝𝐞𝐫 𝐜𝐡𝐨𝐨𝐬𝐞 their own 𝐍𝐄𝐗𝐓 𝐋𝐄𝐕𝐄𝐋 𝐎𝐅 𝐋𝐄𝐀𝐃𝐄𝐑𝐒𝐇𝐈𝐏 𝐒𝐓𝐘𝐋𝐄.
