TiE Singapore recently hosted an enlightening fireside chat featuring Mr. Ravi Kant, CEO and Managing Director at Tata Motors, titled "Leading From The Back in the VUCA World", facilitated by our charter member Jayesh Parekh. Mr. Ravi Kant shared his unconventional perspective on leadership, contrasting it with the traditional approach of leading from the front. Here are some key highlights from his talk: ~ To achieve excellence, individuals should venture beyond conventional limits. This becomes especially critical in larger organizations where differentiating production from consumption is vital. ~ Leadership is essential in both small and large organizations. As a front-line leader, demonstrating bravery and strategic thinking is key. ~ Leaders must balance the creation of shareholder value with societal responsibilities. Organizations need to be agile and proactive to manage unpredictability. ~Successful organizations often have distributed leadership rather than centralized control. Leading from the back can be effective in diverse situations. ~Leaders should maintain an open mind, take ownership, and remain detached to handle unforeseen challenges effectively. Trust within the team is crucial. Leaders must acknowledge the expertise within their organization and exhibit patience and behavior-based leadership. ~Emphasizing individuals' strengths rather than weaknesses can foster a powerful organization capable of extraordinary achievements. The discussion highlighted fostering psychological safety, differentiating mental health from wellbeing, and offering practical tips for maintaining mental wellness. During the session, Mr. Yeo discussed the complexities of today's multipolar world and offered insights into how entrepreneurs and business leaders can navigate diverse geopolitical landscapes. Some key highlights from the session include: 💎 Being a Singaporean means growing better and while being a bigger person, treating everyone equally and with respect, and compassionately doing more for others. 💎 We live in a multipolar world, and Singapore must carefully balance relations, especially between the US and China, while also strengthening ties with other 'middle powers' like Japan, India, the Middle East, and Africa. 💎 Singapore's greatest strength lies in its trust and credibility. It excels at leveraging price, knowledge, relationships, and technology to create and capture value wherever there is an imbalance in the world. 💎He encouraged the younger generation to read extensively and explore various viewpoints as this is essential for them to develop their own perspectives and frameworks for life, work, and play. 💎 We shouldn't view the world solely through the lens of Western democracies. TiE Singapore warmly welcomes Mukesh Sharda, Managing Partner at Capital Square Partners (CSP), as our newest charter member. Mukesh is also a Director on the Board of Startek, Movate, Trainz and Bits in Glass. CSP is a Singapore-based private equity firm with over US$ 1.5 billion under management, investing in cross-border technology and business services across Southeast Asia/ India.   Prior to founding CSP, he was Executive Director and Country Head for Avenue Capital Group, an investment manager with over US$ 20 billion in AUM and dedicated funds of US$ 5 billion raised to invest in Asia at that time. He managed investments in South East Asia and India and developed a strong track record of generating returns from investing in private equity and structured deals. Prior to joining Avenue, Mukesh worked in Structured Finance and investment banking for over ten years in Singapore and Hong Kong, primarily with Deutsche Bank. TiE Singapore warmly welcomes Chandan Deep, Vice President, Strategy & Operations, B Capital Group, as our newest Charter member.   Chandan is an operator and advisor with a keen interest in scaling up high-growth tech businesses in Asia. In her current role, she leads strategy and operations, partnering with founders and leadership teams of their portfolio companies to drive growth and GTM. Previously, she was one of the early employees for Twitter in the region post IPO, scaling out their commercial operations across 6 markets to $100 Mn+ revenue run rate. Prior to her venture into tech, she spent several formative years in management consulting across BCG and Accenture specialising in tech, media and telecom sectors. She is keen to contribute to diversity efforts and building out the community of women in tech. She co-chairs the global culture committee at B Capital, previously ran Twitter’s women chapter in Asia, and co-founded Connected Women, a tech leadership forum in Singapore across Meta, Twitter, MasterCard, LinkedIn & Google.
