Today marks a significant milestone for R-Cities as we officially launch our statement on the ⚡new agenda for #UrbanResilienceAction. This consensus was reached during the convening at the Rockefeller Center in Bellagio. We are uniting global leaders under a common agenda to empower cities through science-based evidence, enhancing their capacity to face the polycrisis. 📢Our action agenda aims to influence national policies and catalyse investment towards resilient urban development. We are proud to join the UN Secretary-General's Call to Action on Extreme Heat. We hope this global effort will foster more enabling environments for our cities to scale the solutions they are already implementing to: 1. 𝐂𝐚𝐫𝐞 𝐟𝐨𝐫 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐯𝐮𝐥𝐧𝐞𝐫𝐚𝐛𝐥𝐞: Implementing targeted measures to protect those most at risk. 2. 𝐏𝐫𝐨𝐭𝐞𝐜𝐭 𝐰𝐨𝐫𝐤𝐞𝐫𝐬: Ensuring safe and healthy working conditions in the face of rising temperatures. 3. 𝐄𝐧𝐡𝐚𝐧𝐜𝐞 𝐫𝐞𝐬𝐢𝐥𝐢𝐞𝐧𝐜𝐞 𝐮𝐬𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐝𝐚𝐭𝐚 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐬𝐜𝐢𝐞𝐧𝐜𝐞: Leveraging innovative solutions and scientific data to strengthen our economies and societies. 4. 𝐋𝐢𝐦𝐢𝐭 𝐭𝐞𝐦𝐩𝐞𝐫𝐚𝐭𝐮𝐫𝐞 𝐫𝐢𝐬𝐞 𝐭𝐨 1.5°𝐂: Accelerating the transition from fossil fuels to renewable energy investments. "Today, policy-makers and decision-makers don't know that heat is the number one killer of people all around the world," says Eleni (Lenio) Myrivili, the UN's first Global Chief Heat Officer. R-Cities is teaming up with the city of Rio de Janeiro at U20 to spotlight the urgent needs of 𝗰𝗶𝘁𝗶𝗲𝘀 𝗿𝗲𝘀𝗽𝗼𝗻𝗱𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝘁𝗼 𝗮 𝗽𝗼𝗹𝘆𝗰𝗿𝗶𝘀𝗶𝘀 𝘄𝗼𝗿𝗹𝗱. 🌍 Co-hosted by Rio de Janeiro and São Paulo, the U20 conference in November will bring together cities from G20 countries to inform and influence the discussions of national leaders at this year's G20. Through its presidency, Brazil is focusing on reforming global governance in the fight against poverty, hunger and inequality and toward advancing sustainable development. Cities recognize the need for bold action to increase social inclusion in the fight against poverty hunger and inequality. Reforming international financial institutions is key to unlocking finance for city-led climate action. Last month, 12 Urban Ocean cities from around the world convened in Chennai, India for the first in-person summit. 🌱 "There is no environmental progress without social justice," the local environmental department (Sedema) told attendees of the #UrbanPulse exchange in Mexico City this May. Rapid growth and development in neighborhoods in the north and east of the city left those areas a sea of gray. The city is bringing green back to these communities, rehabilitating parks and public spaces, planting millions of trees and plants and replacing asphalt with nature. Environmental restoration boosts the health, wellness and livelihoods of the women employed as gardeners by the city, as well as local farmers who depend on a healthy environment to produce food. Communities can be active partners to strengthen and build urban resilience. R-Cities, along with partners ICLEI Europe and Spanish Red Cross and city leaders from Greater Manchester and London brought that message to last month's EURESFO convening in Valencia. As part of the Resilience for Communities program, these cities and others are assessing flood and heat risks and formulating resilience projects to address these vulnerabilities from the ground up. By understanding what residents think, feel and know about their risks, cities can include clearly defined benefits for communities at the outset of a project, building momentum and support for positive change at scale. 😤 Cities often face crises due to the inaction of their national governments. For Montevideo, it was the water crisis.   Uruguay was caught unprepared by a three-year-long drought and poor water management. When Montevideo's reservoirs dried up, the city relied on data to ensure everyone had access to clean water.   📺Clear, reliable and transparent daily updates on water quality and access points helped the city prevent a health crisis, avoid social conflicts and ensure equitable distribution among residents, essential services and businesses.
