Today marks a significant milestone for R-Cities as we officially launch our statement on the ⚡new agenda for #UrbanResilienceAction. This consensus was reached during the convening at the Rockefeller Center in Bellagio. We are uniting global leaders under a common agenda to empower cities through science-based evidence, enhancing their capacity to face the polycrisis. 📢Our action agenda aims to influence national policies and catalyse investment towards resilient urban development. We urge city leaders, policymakers, and stakeholders in our urban resilience community to sign and support this statement—𝗮 𝗰𝗮𝗹𝗹 𝘁𝗼 𝗮𝗰𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝗳𝗼𝗿 𝗮𝗹𝗹 𝘁𝗼 𝗹𝗲𝘃𝗲𝗿𝗮𝗴𝗲 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗳𝗼𝗿𝘁𝗵𝗰𝗼𝗺𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗜𝗣𝗖𝗖 𝗦𝗽𝗲𝗰𝗶𝗮𝗹 𝗥𝗲𝗽𝗼𝗿𝘁 𝗼𝗻 𝗖𝗶𝘁𝗶𝗲𝘀, 𝗮𝗹𝗶𝗴𝗻 𝗻𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻𝗮𝗹 𝗽𝗼𝗹𝗶𝗰𝗶𝗲𝘀 𝘄𝗶𝘁𝗵 𝗹𝗼𝗰𝗮𝗹𝗶𝘇𝗲𝗱 𝘂𝗿𝗯𝗮𝗻 𝗻𝗲𝗲𝗱𝘀, 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝘀𝗵𝗶𝗳𝘁 𝗳𝗿𝗼𝗺 𝗶𝘀𝗼𝗹𝗮𝘁𝗲𝗱 𝗽𝗿𝗼𝗷𝗲𝗰𝘁𝘀 𝘁𝗼 𝘀𝘆𝘀𝘁𝗲𝗺𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗰 𝗽𝗼𝗿𝘁𝗳𝗼𝗹𝗶𝗼 𝗺𝗮𝗻𝗮𝗴𝗲𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘁. Access to reliable energy changes life for the better, but far too many people around the globe lack consistent energy access. In just over a week, 11 cities working to build energy resilience will gather for the 𝗨𝗿𝗯𝗮𝗻 𝗣𝗼𝘄𝗲𝗿𝗫𝗖𝗵𝗮𝗻𝗴𝗲 in Cape Town. Though they are at different stages in their resilience journeys, our Urban Power cities are innovating to overcome common challenges and seize opportunities to expand access to clean, reliable energy. Through its resilience-focused energy initiatives, Cape Town is an inspiring example for others. From the city’s pivotal campaign to stave off the Day Zero drought to its efforts to end energy poverty, Cape Town consistently brings a unique perspective to the network given its rich history as well as the diverse shocks and stresses the city faces. We are proud to join the UN Secretary-General's Call to Action on Extreme Heat. R-Cities is teaming up with the city of Rio de Janeiro at U20 to spotlight the urgent needs of 𝗰𝗶𝘁𝗶𝗲𝘀 𝗿𝗲𝘀𝗽𝗼𝗻𝗱𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝘁𝗼 𝗮 𝗽𝗼𝗹𝘆𝗰𝗿𝗶𝘀𝗶𝘀 𝘄𝗼𝗿𝗹𝗱. 🌍 Co-hosted by Rio de Janeiro and São Paulo, the U20 conference in November will bring together cities from G20 countries to inform and influence the discussions of national leaders at this year's G20. Through its presidency, Brazil is focusing on reforming global governance in the fight against poverty, hunger and inequality and toward advancing sustainable development. Cities recognize the need for bold action to increase social inclusion in the fight against poverty hunger and inequality. Reforming international financial institutions is key to unlocking finance for city-led climate action. Our work with the City of Rio de Janeiro has already begun as we plan events and activities to amplify a strong agenda for urban resilience action and the efforts the co-host cities are doing in the lead-up to this conference.🌆💪 Together we will continue to drive positive change towards a more just and resilient future! 🌟 Prefeitura do Rio de Janeiro | Eduardo Paes | Lucas Wosgrau Padilha | Giorgia Araujo da Costa Val | Bruno Neele

Last month, 12 Urban Ocean cities from around the world convened in Chennai, India for the first in-person summit. Urban Ocean cities have been addressing plastic pollution through combinations of upstream and downstream interventions, engaging with actors from varied industries and sectors, such as construction and demolition, tech, education, environmental management and the informal waste sector.   Learn more about our Urban Ocean program, in partnership with Ocean Conservancy and The Circulate Initiative and made possible by funding from NOAA: National Oceanic & Atmospheric Administration Marine Debris Program: https://lnkd.in/gHDYZ4mj #UrbanOcean #PlasticFreeJuly

🌱 "There is no environmental progress without social justice," the local environmental department (Sedema) told attendees of the #UrbanPulse exchange in Mexico City this May. Rapid growth and development in neighborhoods in the north and east of the city left those areas a sea of gray. The city is bringing green back to these communities, rehabilitating parks and public spaces, planting millions of trees and plants and replacing asphalt with nature. Environmental restoration boosts the health, wellness and livelihoods of the women employed as gardeners by the city, as well as local farmers who depend on a healthy environment to produce food. In Mexico City, investing in social and environmental justice is contributing to a healthier future. #CitiesSolveCitiesDeliver Gobierno de la Ciudad de México | Claudia Hernández Fernández | Arturo Morell | Myriam Urzua Venegas | Norlang Marcel García Arróliga

Communities can be active partners to strengthen and build urban resilience. R-Cities, along with partners ICLEI Europe and Spanish Red Cross and city leaders from Greater Manchester and London brought that message to last month's EURESFO convening in Valencia. As part of the Resilience for Communities program, these cities and others are assessing flood and heat risks and formulating resilience projects to address these vulnerabilities from the ground up. By understanding what residents think, feel and know about their risks, cities can include clearly defined benefits for communities at the outset of a project, building momentum and support for positive change at scale. We're proud to be leading this work in Greater Manchester, Melaka, Houston and Boston, amplifying the needs of communities most likely to be impacted by climate change and other threats. #NewVoiceInResilience #R4C Kathryn Oldham OBE | Kristen Guida | Juan Otero Ketterer | Karl Astbury | Z Zurich Foundation | Simge Tuna | David Nash | Gregory Renand

😤 Cities often face crises due to the inaction of their national governments. For Montevideo, it was the water crisis.   Uruguay was caught unprepared by a three-year-long drought and poor water management. When Montevideo's reservoirs dried up, the city relied on data to ensure everyone had access to clean water.   📺Clear, reliable and transparent daily updates on water quality and access points helped the city prevent a health crisis, avoid social conflicts and ensure equitable distribution among residents, essential services and businesses. Montevideo showed how #CitiesSolveCitiesDeliver, working to ensure residents' right to clean drinking water in a crisis. #UrbanPulse Intendencia de Montevideo | Guzmán Robaina Da Silva | Gabriela Pignataro
