Last week we unveiled a mountain of biochar that we're giddy to announce is now the largest Puro.earth-certified project in Africa. We also made the first delivery from the project, delivering 555 credits. 💪 This week, we want to reveal what’s behind that enormous pile, by sharing a look into the incredible experiences we encounter on the ground through Planboo’s lens - footage of the amazing places we discover and the inspiring people we meet as we develop our projects. A glimpse into the stories behind the science, the beauty brought about by biochar, and the art of simple, honest carbon removal. 🌱 Partnering Puro.earth, Earthood and Carbon Capital (Pty) Ltd, this project aims to restore ecological balance to the Savannah. By uprooting the encroaching bush, turning it into high quality biochar and putting it into the ground, we bolster natural ecosystems, improve soil health and permanently remove CO2 from the atmosphere. This year we're removing 12,000 tonnes of CO2, with a plan to scale to 250,000 tonnes CO2. Big thanks to our partners always for making this project possible! Want to dive deeper? Reach out to Hedda Björck to request our project deck for an in-depth look at the project in its entirety. #Biochar #CarbonRemoval #ClimateAction #Namibia #CDR #NetZero Freddie Catlow Colin Malan Lindeque Marc Hernandez Folguera

🌿 Wonders of Biochar in Ghana 🌿 Colourful update from Victor Ekissi, the C-sink manager of our project in Ghana, highlighting the transformative potential of biochar. Victor's passion for sustainable farming practices and the promising results of incorporating #biochar in Ghana's soil is truly inspiring. The use of biochar alongside organic compost is proving to be a game-changer, and like Victor, we're eager to share the results and the positive impact biochar will have on the cocoa farming sector and beyond. 🌱🌍 Reach out to learn more about the project and how to support biochar carbon removal efforts and the future of agriculture across the tropics. #Biochar #SustainableAgriculture #SoilHealth #CocoaFarming #ClimateAction #CarbonRemoval 石本(Ishimoto)満生(Mitsuo) Hedda Björck Fred Hornaday
The wonders of Biochar 🍀🌱 Is about time in Ghana 🇬🇭, we advocate for the use and incorporating of #Biochar to our soils by reducing the usage of chemical fertilizers by farmers. The use of biochar + #organiccompost as an organic Fertilizers are showing massive results in improving soil fertility and nutrient availability in farming now. biochar technology can lead to higher crop yields and can also Increased yields . Very soon in the #cocoa farming sector , our farmers will soon start seeing the results of applying biochar in their soils. I believe our farmers will Harvest more cocoa beans 🫘 in the coming harvest seaons. Which will result in higher revenues and improved income levels among farmers in the Agric sector. NB: If you’re an organization in the farming sector interested in training your farmers in quality biochar production, kindly feel free to contact me as your trainer. Thank you . https://lnkd.in/eaVius5Q

⭐ Friday update from our project in Namibia, Omiti Biochar! ⭐ The local team is diligently working to return carbon to its rightful place – the ground. It's incredibly exciting to witness this project flourish, transformation bush into biochar through a community-driven approach. Reach out for more updates on the progress and ways to support carbon removal. 🌱 #Biochar #CarbonRemoval #ClimateAction #CommunityImpact
The Significance Biochar Can Have for Namibia’s Remote Communities : Some 1.1 million people live in Namibia’s communal areas, which is almost half the total population. And because of the increasing population pressure, more and more rangeland is being used for crop production, since alternative sources of income are almost non-existent in these remote communal areas. But, in general, soils are poor in nutrients and organic matter. Alkalinity, salinity, sodality, poor water retention capacity are all common features. Rainfall is erratic and low, direct sunlight is extremely intense. Low soil fertility combined with low and variable rainfall restrict the livelihoods of smallholder farmers in these communal areas who often struggle to produce enough food. Although historically, communities have adopted a number of coping mechanisms, bush encroachment and climate change threaten to further reduce agricultural production. And then inorganic fertilizer prices have also tripled since early 2020 and remain volatile, putting a stable supply of fertilizer out of reach of many of these farmers. In the context of food insecurity, rural poverty and climate change in Namibia, the protection and sustainable management of soil and land resources are of paramount importance. Seeing soils merely as an input-output system for food production is unsustainable and are degrading the precious soil resources. Adding biochar to Namibia’s soils is one of the best practices to overcome any organic stress and to increase agricultural productivity in the country’s remote communal areas. Biochar is a long-term solution persisting in the soil even under warm conditions, allowing the soil to retain nutrients and water. Biochar is a vital tool in soil health management that increases total soil carbon and various soil functions. Particularly for eroded or otherwise degraded soils, biochar improves soil health, crop yield, and crop resilience, and thereby increasing food security for many households. That's why we at Omiti Biochar believe in building Biochar Carbon Removal projects that are community centered and professional driven. Omiti Biochar has partnered with Planboo on the project in Otjimbingwe who provides the dMRV technology and purchasing our carbon removal credits.

🤝 A meeting of minds: Solidaridad Network and Planboo join forces to steer the cotton sector in Zambia towards climate resilience. Planboo and Solidaridad, a civil society organization that creates better perspectives for farmers and workers in developing countries have joined forces in the name of improving agricultural practices across Zambia’s cotton sector, to build smallholder farmer resilience and contribute in combating climate change. 🌿 Across Zambia, cotton is a primary source of income for more than 300,000 smallholder farmers, but cotton production is at its lowest in decades, down by 50% from 2012. This is due to many factors, severe drought being among them. Severe drought means severe soil degradation, threatening the sector and damaging farmers’ incomes. This is where biochar comes in. Application of biochar to the soil increases its water and nutrient holding capacity, acting as a carbon sponge for rain and reducing the investment for fertilisers. By leveraging Solidaridad’s experience in sustainable agriculture with our digital MRVin platform, the partnership aims to support over 100,000 cotton smallholder farmers in Zambia over the next 5 years to produce and adopt biochar, with objectives to increase farmer yields and incomes, improve soil health and remove carbon from the atmosphere. 🌍 Read more on the website (link in the comments) and reach out to Hedda Björck if you’re interested in carbon credits that support our planet and its people… Freddie Catlow Eduard Merger #cotton #Zambia #biochar #PES #climatesmartagriculture #carbonremoval
