Welcome to Role-playing Games Stack Exchange

site icon

RPG Stack Exchange is a question and answer site for gamemasters and players of tabletop, paper-and-pencil role-playing games. We cater to hundreds of tabletop RPGs including D&D, Fate, GURPS, World of Darkness, and more. RPG Stack Exchange is built and run by you as part of the Stack Exchange network of Q&A sites. With your help, we're working together to build a library of detailed answers to every question about role-playing games.

We're a little bit different from other sites. Here's how:

Ask questions, get answers, no distractions

This site is all about getting answers. It's not a discussion forum. There's no chit-chat.

Just questions...

...and answers.

Good answers are voted up and rise to the top.

The best answers show up first so that they are always easy to find.

The person who asked can mark one answer as "accepted".

Accepting doesn't mean it's the best answer, it just means that it worked for the person who asked.

Are Hags Fey or Fiends?

14

The MM indicates that Sea Hags and Green Hags are both fey creatures while Night Hags are considered fiends.

Can anyone clarify if this is a typo and whether they're all supposed to be the same? If so, what should they be?

From page 178 of the MM:

“Night Hags were once creatures of the Feywild, but their foulness saw them exiled to Hades long ago, where they degenerated into fiends.”

So Night Hags are Fiends.

Volo's Guide to Monsters lists the Annis Hag and the Bheur Hag as fey, implying that hags are fey in general. The Night Hag appears to be an exception.

Get answers to practical, detailed questions

Focus on questions about an actual problem you have faced. Include details about what you have tried and exactly what you are trying to do.

Ask about...

  • A specific problem with playing or running a table-top RPG or LARPs, including those run over mediums such as play-by-post, play-by-chat, or online tabletop simulators
  • RPG rules, mechanics, adventures, and campaigns
  • Social issues within your RPG or LARP group, except where they have no relation to your gaming
  • Tools and equipment used while playing table-top RPGs
  • Information about RPG campaign settings
  • Techniques for running or playing RPGs
  • Matters which are specific to table-top pen and paper RPGs

Not all questions work well in our format. Avoid questions that are primarily opinion-based, or that are likely to generate discussion rather than answers.

Questions that need improvement may be closed until someone fixes them.

Don't ask about...

  • Anything not directly related to role-playing games
  • Brainstorming requests (“give me some cool ideas”)
  • Questions that are primarily opinion-based (“what do you think about thing?”)
  • Questions with too many possible answers or that would require a novel-length answer
  • Questions about computer RPGs or board and card games; these have their own dedicated Stack Exchange sites

Tags make it easy to find interesting questions

All questions are tagged with their subject areas. Each can have up to 5 tags, since a question might be related to several subjects.

Click any tag to see a list of questions with that tag, or go to the tag list to browse for topics that interest you.

@tillmas, probably a philosophical discussion between the words ancestry and degenerated. To answer your question. I would say yes, as it clearly states they were exiled from the Feywild. - Dressy Dec 29, 2016 at 23:04
