Personal profile

Biography

I work on the historical novel, contemporary European and North American memory cultures, counter-memories and the representation of the past in the present. I am the founder of the Novel Writing Workshop at the University of Bonn, which I directed from 2014 to 2021. My novels are published by Penguin Random House and Harper Collins. I am  working both critically and creatively on the myth of Penthesilea, the Amazons, and the Trojan war.

Social responsibility

I am the founder of 42 Magazine and a regular contributor on issues such as gender equality, balancing the historical record, productive (counter-) memories and feminism in different media outlets, such as Aeon, Antigone and Deutsche Welle.

Research interests

I am particularly interested in literature as driver and distiller of memory culture, as well as the nexus of literature and emotion, narrative and affect, in particular in contemporary re-writings of canonical stories and historical events.
