Pantheon in Italy, Rome

Classics and Ancient History at Manchester has a strong research record, with more than 70% of our research activity rated as 'world leading' (4*) or 'internationally excellent' (3*).

Our research covers Greek and Roman history, Classical literature and its reception, and Classical Philology and Linguistics.  All of our staff pursue active individual research programmes, but we also have particular collaborative and shared strengths in a number of areas: ancient epistolography, Greek epigraphy, and ancient medicine and its reception.  Interdisciplinary research is also an important part of the work we carry out, especially in the fields of late antiquity, ancient history, and ancient literature, medicine and technical writing.

Of special significance for classicists and ancient historians are the impressive collections of a large number of electronic journals in Classic and Ancient History and early printed books held at the John Rylands Library.
