Gastric cancer is the third leading cause of cancer-related mortality worldwide, accounting for 8% of all cancer deaths in 2020. The incidence and mortality of gastric cancer vary with different geographic regions; the highest rates have been observed in countries in Eastern Asia, South America, and Eastern Europe. Although the identification of risk factors has led to a decline in incidence, gastric cancer is often diagnosed at an advanced stage and carries a poor prognosis. Identifying individuals at risk for gastric cancer can facilitate an early diagnosis and improve outcomes.
