    Research interests

The lab of Drs. Amanda Nelson and Diane Thiboutot is focused on understanding the skin-specific and immune mechanisms underlying inflammatory skin diseases associated with sebaceous glands and hair follicles, such as acne vulgaris and hidradenitis suppurativa. The lab is also interested in the role of innate immunity, specifically TLR signaling pathways, in normal keratinocytes and in non-melanoma skin cancer. Another focus of the laboratory is understanding the relationship between the skin microbiome, host immune response and changes that occur with the development of skin diseases or the treatment of skin diseases. Translational studies use cell culture, mouse models and samples from patients. The group uses its varied expertise in cell and molecular biology approaches and human subjects research to investigate the pathogenesis of skin diseases.
