Failure is important. Embrace failure as a learning opportunity. Instead of seeing setbacks as roadblocks, view them as stepping stones on your entrepreneurial journey. Embracing failure allows you to learn, adapt, and grow stronger.

Another recommendation I have is to keep your purpose really simple. It makes it easier to remember it when times get tough. My company's purpose is to "help artists share their gift with the world." It's really easy for me to remember when things get stressful!

If you've not read Simon Sinek's "Start with Why", this is a good place to start! You need to determine your "why". Running a business can have massive peaks and troughs. So, when you're riding one of the troughs, you will ask yourself: "Why am I doing this?!" If you don't know the answer to this question, you will find it hard to motivate yourself to get out of the slump that you're in!

From my experience, striking the right balance between optimism and realism begins with a profound understanding of one's purpose. I believe that by anchoring oneself to a clear, meaningful purpose that embodies values and aspirations, one can remain resilient and focused, even amidst adversities. From my perspective, this self-awareness and regular reflection on one's mission offers the compass needed to navigate challenges without losing sight of the ultimate goal.

Starting my entrepreneurial journey, I believed that feelings of uncertainty indicated a lack of preparation or intelligence. But as I progressed, I realized that uncertainty is the constant rhythm of this ecosystem. Whether you're a pop-up shop or a startup that just secured $20 million, that rhythm beats on. So like Holmes, you must play the wacky detective, always testing your hypotheses about market trends, customer needs, technology, etc. The goal isn't to nail each idea on the first try; it's to effectively test ideas and leverage the results to inform your next move. Getting lost in entrepreneurship is inevitable, so it's best to be lost in motion. Embrace the uncertainty, and allow it to guide you toward discoveries and growth.

I think many people will find it difficult to "embrace" uncertainty, as it's never going to be something you will feel comfortable with. After all, it's uncertainty - the definition explains itself! BUT, you can learn to realise that uncertainty is a natural part of entrepreneurship and you absolutely will face it regularly. You can learn how to handle it and use these moments as lessons to grow.

This is something I have spoken about in my TEDx talk say NO to NO. I have faced many no's in my life, but rather than accept that as the end, I have chosen to find a way around these to get to my destination. No is just an opportunity to do something differently... https://www.ted.com/talks/susan_walsh_say_no_to_no

The dance between optimism and realism in the face of adversity is rooted in our ability to embrace uncertainty. I believe that by viewing the unpredictable landscape of entrepreneurship as a canvas for growth and innovation, we position ourselves to learn and pivot effectively. From my experience, adopting a growth mindset, where challenges become feedback rather than failures, transforms uncertainty into a powerful catalyst for creativity and resilience.

This is really not easy, especially if you're an emotional person. And I want to bust the myth that emotional people can't be good at business. But you do need to have an active voice that tells you when perhaps you're overreacting. You also need to have outside opinions who can guide you through tricky times, so that you can have an objective evaluation of certain situations. Self-development is such a huge part of entrepreneurship and you will need to do a lot of it to learn how to manage your emotions. What triggers you? What frustrates you? What excites you? Knowing the answers to all these things can help you avoid any emotional surprises.

I have found that managing emotions is better when I incorporate a few of the following: -Regular exercise -Gratitude or thankfulness journaling -perspective, as in talking to fellow entrepreneurs about it -celebrating small wins Everyday is a gift and it helps to see it that way. Acknowledge when things don't go as planned and then get back in there to devise a solution or another path. Staying solution oriented and maintaining the ability to pivot is important, in my opinion.

Be careful about suppressing your feelings. Instead, learn to process them in a healthy manner. If you don't they will come out sideways or take a toll on your health. I've found Emotional Freedom Techniques (EFT) tapping and Neurolinguistic Programming (NLP) helpful for managing my emotions. Some people exercise or meditate. Find what works best for you.

This has personally taken me a bit to understand and in the beginning of my entrepreneurial career, I was definitely navigating the waters by myself. I'm sure you've heard of the phrase "Your network is your net worth." It might be quite extreme, but it demonstrates the importance of utilising your network. But let's put aside the financial possibilities and opportunities that arise from your network for a moment and focus on the support. Your network is like a huge, diverse board of advisors! They all have different experiences, resources at their disposal and connections of their own. They can introduce you to a key player, or give you that piece of advice you really needed to hear. Most of all, they can help you when you're feeling low. This is especially important when you're a solo founder.

When it was time for me to seek programs to enhance my skills, I first evaluated my business to identify the areas of improvement. Once I had a solid list of improvement areas, then I started researching ways that I could get the education for the skillsets I needed to enhance. I found a mixture of degrees, certifications, and mentorship programs that worked together to help me enhance the skills I needed for my business. In today's world, there are many combinations of online and in-person programs that can help you reach your desired skillset in entrepreneurship.

The best entrepreneurs are always learning something. Even though they are often leading their field, they're always enrolling in courses, getting coaches, and obtaining further qualifications. If you're not moving forwards, then you're going backwards. That sounds super confusing, but if you're staying where you are, then everyone else around you who is improving will overtake you. Keep challenging yourself and always look to develop your skills across the board.

Schedule time for yourself the same way you schedule work meetings. Block it in your calendar, and let your team know that time is untouchable in the same fashion your meetings are untouchable. It may sound silly at first to add things like "coffee with my partner" or "go to the gym" on to your calendar, but I've seen it be really effective for a lot of people in regards to enforcing a work-life balance.

Ok, you fell off the proverbial horse. So what do you do? Yes, you climb back on and ride further. You may fall again. Or not. Entrepreneurship is more like a roller coaster ride. Excruciatingly slow climbs and gut-wrenching declines, yet at the pit of the valley you rise up the mountain to repeat the cycle again. You chose this way of life. Embrace it and optimize it. Never despair. Persevere. This business is yours to conquer.

It's so easy to get consumed in your business - after all, it's what you're super passionate about. But it can spiral you into a place you don't want to be. You absolutely need downtime, no matter what you think. You may think you can work all night and all weekend as you're feeling productive, but the ideas and quality of work drops. So, remember to take a break. Schedule in time for just YOU. Not your business, but YOU. Whatever you like doing - whether it's reading a book, doing yoga, watching Netflix or playing sport, go and do that and don't think about your business!
