Since its creation in the fall of 2014, the Online MBA at the University of Utah David Eccles School of Business has kickstarted the careers of hundreds of ambitious business professionals around the world.
Students can take all classes online or attend in-person classes at the beautiful Salt Lake City campus. In addition, with its rolling admissions, the Utah Eccles program allows someone accepted into the program in the fall to postpone their studies for a semester or longer. Program deadlines are designed to work with your busy schedule; if you miss one, you’ll still be eligible to apply, thanks to the rolling admissions process.
Rachel Blatchford, Senior Program Manager, believes in considering all applications “holistically.” The David Eccles School of Business understands you are more than just a number, so there’s no minimum GMAT or GRE score. The program takes into consideration the unique talents, skills, and experiences each prospective student brings to the table.
The strictest requirement, Blatchford says, is that all students must be working full-time when they start the program. They also must have at least one full year of work experience, though the average is closer to nine years.
“With admit requirements, if you are lower in one area, you can make up for it in another, like work experience,” Blatchford says. “We consider every application, every student, holistically, meaning we want to find people who are the right fit and have the tools to succeed.”

CAREER SUPPORT
Throughout the duration of the program, Online MBA students at the David Eccles School of Business have access to an extensive network of resources. The program boasts knowledgeable faculty, a cohort from diverse backgrounds, and one-on-one advising every step of the way. Eccles students are provided with the support and confidence they need to become well-versed in business acumen.
OMBA Brooke Vincent-Lewis found out about the University of Utah online MBA option specifically after inquiring about the school’s professional MBA program. She had just moved back to Utah with her husband after spending 10 years in Buffalo, New York.
“I knew being on campus 15+ hours a week would be tough with all that was going on in my life,” Vincent-Lewis tells Poets&Quants. “I expressed my concerns to the program director at the time, who insisted I attend an information session about the online program. After learning that the online program would be quite similar to the professional program, I sent in my application.”
Popular amongst local Online MBA students are the networking events hosted every other month, giving cohorts the chance to meet in person and form stronger connections with their peers, which many can do because most OMBAs actually live in-state.
Eccles students have the option to attend classes locally, and the fall semester includes an in-person residency requirement. During this three-day residency, students stay on-campus or in a nearby hotel and complete 1.5 credits. Residency has received overwhelmingly positive feedback, says Rachel Blatchford, and it’s likely because it facilitates networking opportunities between peers, faculty, and alumni and allows students to connect with others who are in a similar position as them.
It’s not just the Eccles in-person residency that ranks high in satisfaction—the program also hosts other events throughout the semester to encourage connection. This includes after-work socials at least once a semester and women’s events every couple of months. According to Rachel Blatchford, students are given plenty of opportunities to forge strong connections with their peers.
