Enhancing Agrofarms with Birds: Reducing Chemical Inputs through Natural Pest Control and Plantation Strategies" Abdul Kareem Gill (MS-Biotechnology Associate Consultant/Trainer Green Environ Sol Pvt Ltd) Worldwide, about 43 percent of land used for agriculture has at least 10 percent tree cover, according to a 2016 study in Scientific Reports. Pakistan has 4.2 million hectares of forest and planted trees, which equates to 4.8 percent of the total land area (FAO-Pakistan). Millions of tons of pesticides are used yearly to control pests in farmlands and forest systems globally. However, during FY23, Pakistan’s total insecticide imports were approximately 37,000 metric tons (FY22: ~36,000 metric tons), amounting to around USD 204 million. The use of such lethal chemicals has long-term implications for human health, biodiversity, soil and water pollution, and the provision of ecosystem services. Pesticides can also affect beneficial organisms such as the natural enemies of pests, pollinators, and decomposers. There is a need for environmentally friendly pest management techniques that not only reduce chemical inputs and support efficient production systems but also contribute to biodiversity conservation and the provision of ecosystem services at different scales. Birds are important biocontrol agents in regulating pests and insects in agricultural landscapes. Insectivorous birds such as the Black-backed Puffback (Dryoscopus cubla), the Cape White-eye (Zosterops virens), the Tawny-flanked Prinia (Prinia subflava), the Gorgeous Bush-shrike (Telophorus viridis), and the Brown-hooded Kingfisher (Halcyon albiventris) provide valuable ecosystem services that are highly underexplored scientifically. It is the right time for fruitful research to be carried out on this aspect to include insectivorous birds as a vital component in the Integrated Pest Management system. The relationship between birds and agro-ecosystems is an emerging field of keen interest among ornithologists in agriculture-dominant countries. South Asia provides habitat to about 1,300 resident or migratory bird species (13% of the world’s avifauna), including 141 endemic species. Agro-ecosystems are mainly dominated by granivorous, insectivorous, and omnivorous species that obtain food in the form of seeds, grains, fruits, insects, and rodents. A huge diversity can be observed at roosting sites based on species-specific preferences for particular habitats, safety, and the need for food and water sources. Economic ornithology accounts for the costs and benefits of avian species to mankind and resources like agriculture, horticulture, sports, and trade. Ecosystem services provided by birds include pest control, scavenging, pollination, and seed dispersal, which are imperative for nature and mankind. Predatory and insectivorous birds play vital roles in biocontrol services in agricultural landscapes, possibly leading to an increase in agricultural yield.
