Billy Bush Negotiating Exit from 'Today' Show as Source Says 'This Behavior Was Out of Character'

Billy Bush is negotiating his exit from the Today show, a source tells PEOPLE.

Bush, 44, has been under fire since the leak of a tape Friday in which he made lewd and graphic comments about women while filming a segment with Donald Trump for Access Hollywood in 2005.

Bush was suspended indefinitely from NBC talk show pending review on Sunday, and the source says “the network is still reviewing the matter.”

“It could be resolved immediately or it could take quite some time,” says the insider. “They’re looking at all aspects of it.”

According to the source, the comments Bush made in the video were out of the ordinary for the co-host.

“Most people at the show have not heard this type of ‘locker room talk’ from him,” says the source. “Most people who have worked with Billy would say that sort of behavior was out of character for him.”

“Billy is a good guy,” adds the insider. “He’s a nice guy. He’s always respectful to women and kind to his colleagues and he has had a good relationship with all of the anchors.”

In regards to the reports that Bush allegedly bragged about the tape while covering the Summer Olympics in Rio, the source says Bush “may have spoken to colleagues in Rio about his 2005 interaction with Trump, but it’s unclear how much he remembered as far as what he may have said himself.”

And according to the source, NBC “did not know that the tape existed until last Monday, when Access Hollywood unearthed it and gave them the heads up.”

“[NBC] was preparing the story, it was just going through a vigorous process,” says the insider.

And while Bush has certainly been facing backlash, the co-host also has some big-name supporters, including his former Access Hollywood co-host Kit Hoover who got emotional on Monday’s episode while defending her friend.

“Those tapes were a decade ago and it was seven minutes of someone’s life, and all I can tell you is what I know and the person that I sat next to for the last six years, and that person for me is a totally different person,” said Hoover, adding, “The Billy that I know and a lot of people would say has the biggest heart of anybody and he is a good person.”

Bush has thus far remained silent on the matter, save for an apology he issued Friday.

“Obviously I’m embarrassed and ashamed,” he said. “It’s no excuse, but this happened eleven years ago — I was younger, less mature, and acted foolishly in playing along. I’m very sorry.”
