MELROSE, MA — Two Somerville teenagers were recently arrested and charged in connection with the armed robbery of a Melrose mail carrier earlier this month, Melrose Police said on Wednesday.

Police did not identify the teens, who are both 16-years-old, due to their age. Police said the two were arraigned in juvenile court on Wednesday, though, on charges of armed masked robbery.

The robbery took place on Saturday, Dec. 10 on Orchard Lane in Melrose, according to police.

The U.S. Postal Inspection Service shared word of this incident earlier this month, offering a reward for information leading to the arrest and conviction of individuals involved.

Police this week said investigators spokes with witnesses and reviewed evidence to identify alleged suspects in the case.

Just over a week after the robbery on Dec. 10, officials said they found the two teens with mail and stolen postal property inside a “suspicious vehicle” near a U.S. Postal Service collection box in Melrose on Sunday, Dec. 18.

Police said TikTok trends and other sources may have given the teens the idea to steal mail containing checks as a way to get money.

This investigation involved joint efforts by the Middlesex District Attorney’s Office, the U.S. Postal Inspection Service and State Police, according to the Melrose Police Department’s announcement Wednesday.
