If you regularly drive, walk, run or cycle along the stretch of coast between Marine Parade and Awatoto, you may have noticed a large truck parked by the high tide mark. It’s a drilling rig, testing how well the coastal gravels can soak away the occasional stormwater discharge. These tests will determine where new outfall ‘pods’ will go. These pods will be connected to a yet-to-be built stormwater pump station at Te Awa. Once the pipe from the station to the pods is in place, they will help manage the water level in Te Awa’s stormwater detention pond and improve stormwater drainage from Maraenui to Te Awa.

We are excited to share the work of local artist Harley Ratima Munro (Ngāti Kahungunu, Rongomaiwahine), who has brought his artistic talent to one of Napier’s water network instrument boxes. Harley’s stunning design tells the story of our precious aquifer, located hundreds of metres below the surface, composed of layers of stones, sand, and gravel. This natural filter plays a crucial role in providing clean drinking water for our community. The instrument box Harley painted houses essential equipment that measures water quality and communicates data to Napier’s SCADA system. This system ensures any issues in the bore are quickly addressed, maintaining the safety and quality of Napier’s water supply. By transforming these highly glossy stainless steel boxes into vibrant canvases, we not only reduce potential distractions for drivers but also celebrate our local talent and the vital story of our water. Thank you, Harley, for your beautiful contribution to our city!

𝗢𝗻 𝘁𝗵𝗶𝘀 𝗱𝗮𝘆 𝟳𝟬 𝘆𝗲𝗮𝗿𝘀 𝗮𝗴𝗼... On the 10th of June 1954, the world-renowned 1.5-metre statue of Pania was unveiled on Marine Parade, by Prime Minister at the time, Sidney Holland. The Pania of the Reef statue was the vision of the Thirty Thousand Club, who were inspired after Anglican Bishop of Aotearoa, Frederick Augustus Bennett, retold the legend of Pania to them. A number of students from Hukarere Girls College volunteered to pose as models for this masterpiece, with Mei Irihapiti Robin (now Mei Whaitiri) chosen to represent the essence of Pania. Crafted with love and legend in mind, the Italian Marble Company of Carrara, Italy, meticulously brought Pania to life in the breathtaking bronze statue you see today, and continues to be admired by thousands of locals and tourists alike.

We are literally watching the grass grow at McLean Park! The first green shoots of the grass sown during routine maintenance of hybrid turf are above ground now. The Magpies will be the first to play on the rejuvenated surface on Saturday 27 July when they’re challenged for the Ranfurly Shield. This work gives us the opportunity to schedule more exciting events at McLean Park, following on from the successful staging of the Tom Jones and Six60 concerts, Nitro Circus and Super Rugby matches. Might we see the Hurricanes run out on to the pitch again soon?
