Homeowner and state senator rush to aid of FedEx driver who collapsed delivering packages in Pa.

A Pennsylvania homeowner and his state senator neighbor quickly jumped into action and performed life-saving measures after a FedEx driver collapsed in the resident’s front yard while dropping off a package last week.

Delivery man Adonis Whitner crumpled to the ground “like a ton of bricks” last Thursday afternoon in the Pittsburgh suburb of Bridgeville after he dropped off boxes in front of Mark Macala’s home, according to Triblive.

“He was not responding; he was not breathing,” Macala told the outlet. “I was doing my best to just get ahold of emergency personnel and do what I could.”

Doorbell footage obtained by WTAE showed the moment the driver fell over and Macala, who was already at the door, rushed to his side.

As Macala, 45, called 911, his neighbor, Pennsylvania Sen. Devlin Robinson, had just pulled up to his driveway across the street when he spotted trouble.

“I looked down, and there was a person laying on the ground in front of his house,” he told the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette. “So I just ran over there.”

Robinson flipped the worker over and tried to open up his airway as 911 operators told the men to perform chest compressions on him.

“It was the longest five minutes of my life,” Macala told the newspaper. “You could hear sirens, and you’re just hoping they get there faster.”

First responders aided Whitner on the front lawn for 30 minutes before they were asked to help lift the man onto a gurney.

Macala only happened to be home to meet with his contractor. He usually goes into the office for work. And Robinson had just dropped by his home on a whim.

“Thank the lord [Robinson came over],” Macala told Triblive. “He was able to help the guy get some breaths; they were very dramatic, labored breaths.”

FedEx thanked both men for their “quick action in coming to our team member’s aid,” according to the Post-Gazette.

Whitner is conscious but expected to have a long recovery ahead of him following the cardiac arrest, the owner of a service provider for FedEx said in a GoFundMe post.

Whitner has worked as a deliveryman for 13 years.

“He is kind, completely professional, and our most skilled delivery driver. In his personal life, he has a passion for cars and planes, and actually has his pilot’s license,” the post states.
