Woman jumps from Disney World ferry in apparent suicide attempt

A woman visiting Walt Disney World jumped out of a ferryboat in an apparent suicide attempt, authorities said.

The 56-year-old woman — who has not been identified — was with people she knew while aboard a ferryboat on the Seven Seas Lagoon near the Magic Kingdom when she intentionally jumped into the water at about 7 p.m. Monday, Orange County sheriff’s officials told the Orlando Sentinel.

The woman was rescued by park officials and taken to a hospital for treatment and a mental evaluation, Cpl. Antwan Daniels said.

Bystanders and Disney workers initially tried to rescue the woman using flotation devices and ropes, but she did not use those items and did not allow herself to be rescued, a sheriff’s spokesman told The Post.

The ferryboats along the Seven Seas Lagoon take visitors to the Magic Kingdom theme park from a transportation and ticket center. It’s unclear whether the woman was entering or leaving the park, according to the Sentinel.

One parkgoer characterized the effort to save the woman as a distressing episode to see.

“Very chaotic and traumatic scene on the ferry boat,” guest Mike Plotkin tweeted.

Another Disney visitor said she was on the boat when the woman went into the water from the vessel’s top deck.

“She fell off the top deck and was rescued by a rescue boat,” visitor Rachel Thompson tweeted. “She was about 300 yards from the ferry when she was rescued.”

Disney officials referred all inquiries to police.
