Did Isiah Thomas Bail on Interview With Michael Kay to Please Knicks?

Isiah Thomas was all set to go on Michael Kay’s ESPN Radio show yesterday afternoon. The station had been promoting the interview all day, Thomas was on the station’s floor at 2 Penn Plaza, and the format had been set: He was to spend about two hours (!) with Kay, even taking phone calls (!!) from listeners. Then, at 5:45, Kay announced that Thomas wouldn’t be appearing. According to Kay, Thomas was asked by the Knicks and Madison Square Garden officials not to go on, since they didn’t believe any good could come of it. That last part is probably true, but a Garden spokesman said that Thomas could have done the interview if he wanted and that “Isiah doesn’t work for us.” Said Kay to the Post: “I’m disappointed. It’s a call he had to make. But I guess he didn’t want to burn any bridges.” So to recap: Legally, it appears Thomas could have done the interview, but for reasons we’d rather not think about, didn’t want to upset his buddies with the Knicks. Kay’s disappointed that he didn’t score the interview. The rest of us are disappointed that those aforementioned bridges aren’t currently engulfed in flames. [NYP, Newsday]
