Last month our Global Environmental and Sustainability Team (GEST) met in Bergen, Norway, to discuss our sustainability goals leading up to 2030. Over three days, the team shared success stories from our farming countries and discussed how Mowi can meet its sustainability goals. The team discussed hybrid energy systems, benthic monitoring, survivability, smart farming with Tidal and net cleaning robots, and large post-smolts. “It was great to meet up with colleagues from other business units to hear about the fantastic work that is being carried out on our sustainability programmes. It was such a positive and inspiring meeting, seeing the passion and commitment that exists to deliver our Leading the Blue Revolution Plan,” Stephen MacIntyre, Head of Environment for Mowi Scotland. The entire team left feeling inspired and with a better understanding of the work, opportunities, and challenges facing each business area.

Our commitment to producing more sustainable food from the ocean guides our day-to-day actions. In 2023, we reduced our scope 1 and 2 emissions by replacing high-emissions fuel types with more climate-friendly alternatives in our feed operations. Nearly 50% of our farming sites worldwide now use hybrid energy systems or are connected to land power. "We have installed 18 hybrid energy systems in our seawater operations in Norway and Chile. By using batteries to power our feeding system, we have avoided the use of approximately 1.3 million litres of fuel and nearly 4,000 tonnes of CO2 emissions since 2021. This fantastic journey will continue with more systems being deployed in Scotland, Chile, and Canada during 2024", Arnt Erik Tronvold, Operational Support Manager, Mowi Norway. We recognise the growing significance of climate change for our business and will continue to work hard to find new ways to offer solutions to combat it.

At Mowi, we have adopted circular economy practices in many parts of our business and do everything we can to reduce, reuse, recycle, and recapture our fishing nets. In 2023, our farming units recycled or reused 1679 tonnes of fishing nets. These nets, at the end of their lifecycle, were collected and made ready for upcycling. The recycling process is not only environmentally friendly but also versatile, as it involves reconversion of the netting into new polyamide filament. This filament is then transformed into a wide range of useful new products, including furniture, swimwear, and carpet yarn. We have set targets, and by 2025, we aim to upcycle 100% of our recyclable net materials.
