Dutch immunologist Jacques Neefjes and his collaegues from Leiden University Medical Center are working to reintroduce aclarubicin, a drug that could significantly improve patients' survival rates for acute myeloid leukaemia (AML). Despite being unavailable in Europe for 20 years, Neefjes estimates that the drug could have helped 100,000 people. His journey has been challenging, involving sourcing the drug from China, finding old samples in Finland, and funding research through an unlikely inheritance. Our community is growing in various aspects of science, making meaningful contributions to society. In a recent interview by de Volkskrant, they highlighted the research done by Matyas Bittenbinder, a biologist and PhD candidate at Naturalis Biodiversity Center Centre and Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam (VU Amsterdam). Bittenbinder shares his fascination with snake venom with Freek Vonk, which is why he continued the project Vonk started. This study seeks to understand how snake venom affects the human body. Both scientists strive to share their passion for nature with the general public. How? Besides researching the toxic mechanisms of snake venom, they create educational content. Matyas has so far written two books to help kids see nature in a new light. "One of the reasons for writing them is that I used to miss such books myself. I try to instill a love of animals in children," he said. In addition to being a scientist and a writer, you can often see him on the Dutch TV channel Klokhuis and as a guest on various talk shows. His research aims to cut the number of snakebite deaths in half by 2030. And the best part? All this is happening in the Leiden Bio Science Park community! The Dutch Bio Science Week is in full swing! Check out the opening as part of the Leiden Knowledge Festival with over 1500 attendees in the heart of historical Leiden! The week opened with inspiring words from Fleur Spijker, Andrea Evers and our colleague Chris Jaeger, emphasizing our mission to create awareness for bioscience and a healthier future. Prof. Dr. Erik Scherder delivered a compelling talk on the impact of lifestyle on brain health. His insights, as always, were enlightening! We also enjoyed a series of mini-lectures covering diverse topics from managing financial uncertainty to the latest innovations in youth mental health using Virtual Reality. Our photo booth was a smashing success for young and old, too! Participants snapped fun photos, capturing the excitement and community spirit of the Leiden Knowledge Festival. Hopefully, these mementoes can serve as a reminder of our commitment to health and innovation! This festival, organized by the Leiden Healthy Society Center in collaboration with partners Leiden University, mboRijnland, Gemeente Leiden and Hogeschool Leiden, helps to make Leiden one of the healthiest cities in the Netherlands. What an energetic morning at Leiden Bio Science Park yesterday touring the campus with the Health~Holland team! Thank you to all guests for joining us in exploring life sciences entrepreneurship and Rijk van Walsem and Jeroen Kries from Gemeente Leiden for organizing! The adventure began with picking up the bikes at Leiden Central, setting the pace for a day filled with energy and innovation. At PLNT Leiden, we kicked things off with presentations from Bastiaan de Roo and Stefan Ellenbroek. Accompanied by fresh coffee and croissants, we learned from their insights before moving on to hear pitches from promising startups like Joris Castermans', Arjan van Unen, and Ivo de Nooijer—each presenting their unique value in the Life Sciences and Health ecosystem. Guided by Nick Veringmeier the momentum continued cycling across the park to Biopartner to visit Willemijn Vader, Jan Schultz, Violette Defourt, and Coen Breedveld. Esther Peters shared the vision for expanding the park and fortifying our international ambitions, and Ernst Nagel further explored with an overview of new public-private partnership opportunities, highlighting the collaborative mindset that drives the sector. Our tour across the park included stops at notable facilities like Johnson & Johnson Innovative Medicine, Bristol Myers Squibb and Galapagos, providing us with a firsthand look at where science meets business. The morning concluded at BioPartner5, where Henriette Lanz showcased Mimetas' growth story. We rounded off our visit with a networking lunch, exchanging ideas and making commitments to drive health innovation forward. Thank you, everyone, for such a productive and inspiring morning!
