Our Program Lead for Banks, Chris Sunderman, recently spoke with Brian Canup from Trade Finance Global (TFG) about the transformative impact digitalisation and standardisation are having on the trade finance and container shipping industries. During the interview, Chris discussed DCSA’s efforts to improve operational efficiency and sustainability through digital advancements such as the electronic bill of lading (eBL) – highlighting that eBL uptake has reached nearly 5% in 2024 so far. Chris also emphasised the link between the adoption of standards and operational efficiency. “We are gradually seeing developments in freight visibility, with an increasing number of shippers adopting our common Track and Trace (T&T) API standard. In September 2023, for instance, less than 100 million APIs were called but this grew to 137 million in March this year – marking a roughly 40% increase.” It’s clear that technological advancement is playing an important role in driving digitalisation and will help to increase the pace of change. We look forward to continued collaboration with our members and other industry stakeholders as we build on this progress. We're on a mission to revolutionise global trade with 100% electronic Bill of Lading (eBL) adoption by 2030! Physically couriering Bills of Lading (B/Ls) is inefficient, costly and prone to fraud. At DCSA, we work closely with solution providers on technical and legal interoperability to ensure that eBLs can be easily adopted across platforms and stakeholders. Our commitment to digital transformation in container shipping is a pledge to support a more efficient and resilient future. Our CEO, Thomas Bagge, recently sat down with Eric Johnson from JOC.com to discuss the significant progress made with digital standard adoption during the first half of 2024. In the interview, Thomas highlighted that DCSA's ocean carrier members adopted twice as many standards in Q1 2024 as they had in the previous five years combined. Thomas explained how this momentum carried into Q2. “We saw more individual standards adopted in May alone than in the prior four years. It is really taking off. We’re getting to a place of critical mass.” As we progress through the second half of 2024, it's clear that this year has been a turning point for digital adoption. We look forward to continuing to collaborate with members and other industry players to drive standardisation across the maritime supply chain. Great to see bulk shipping pushing ahead with the adoption of eBills and providing some real-world results. This was achieved using existing solutions - you don’t need to wait - start using eBills now! Congratulations to Vale, BHP, Rio Tinto and Anglo American for working together with stakeholders to make this great achievement happen. The results speak for themselves. The adoption of eBills in the bulk sector is accelerating and we are finally seeing real growth - not trials or proofs of concept, but genuine trade on eBills! These results are for one important commodity - iron ore. Building on this success we are extending the 25 by 25 campaign to other commodities and trades. Congratulations to BHP, Rio Tinto, Vale and Anglo American for helping to "show the way" on eBills. https://lnkd.in/eV2V9295 Future International Trade (FIT) Alliance BHP Rio Tinto Vale Anglo American BIMCO Digital Container Shipping Association (DCSA) FIATA International Federation of Freight Forwarders Associations Swift
