This encourages the roots to grow deep into the soil, promoting a stronger and more drought-resistant root system. Deep watering usually is done less than your normal irrigation cycles. Factors like soil types, soil structure, climate will determine how frequent deep watering will be needed. Usually know when your top root zone or first 10 to 20cm dry out, you will need to start irrigating. When you plan on a deep watering to the lower root zone or buffer, make sure you have sufficient water penetration into the soil profile. This could mean applying a large volume of water during the irrigation cycle. Proper saturation of soil to the lower root zone will encourage roots to grow deeper. Using a Soil Moisture Probe it will allow you to accurately monitor each zone. 💦 Overwatering Overwatering occurs when the tree receives more water than it can use or when the soil remains constantly saturated. This often involves watering too frequently. Even if you water less often but apply too much water each time, it can lead to overwatering and deprive roots from necessary oxygen in soil. Safety in harvesting entails wearing appropriate gear when harvesting crops or handling the harvested crops. Ensuring machinery or any equipment used pass the safety standards. Your life as a farmer is more important than your money. Take precautions when harvesting. Always be mindful of snakes or any other thing that may harm you or affect the crops you are harvesting. Challenges: However, implementing safety and hygiene practices in crop harvesting faces several key challenges. Among them Lack awareness and training. Many farmers may not have sufficient knowledge about safety and hygiene practices related to crop harvesting. This lack of awareness can lead to improper handling of tools and equipment, inadequate personal protective measures, and insufficient understanding of potential hazards. In certain regions, farmers may have limited access to proper tools, equipment, and infrastructure necessary for maintaining safety and hygiene during crop harvesting. This includes items such as protective clothing, gloves, masks, and washing facilities. The absence of these resources can hinder the adoption of best practices. Crop harvests often occur within specific time frames when the produce is at its peak ripeness. Global field survey on soil biodiversity 🌎🦠 🔬 In a recent study, Ochoa-Hueso et al. EMERGING TRENDS OF CSA( Climate Smart Agriculture) in Northern Nigeria. Climate-smart agriculture (CSA) is gaining momentum in Northern Nigeria as a response to the increasing challenges posed by climate change, such as desertification, unpredictable weather patterns, and soil degradation. Several initiatives and projects highlight emerging trends and the potential for growth in this sector. 1. Biofortified Crops and Nutrition-Smart Agriculture: Projects like the one led by HarvestPlus are promoting climate-smart crops such as vitamin A maize, iron pearl millet, and iron and zinc cowpea. These crops are designed to be more resilient to climate stressors and nutritionally superior. The project aims to enhance climate resilience and food security for 650,000 farming households by 2024, covering 432,500 hectares with these climate-smart technologies. 2. Systems of Rice Intensification (SRI): The LINKS project has been implementing SRI in Jigawa, Kaduna, and Kano states.
