  • ⚖️ During our recent engagement with key stakeholders in the criminal justice system in Awka, Anambra State, we received a powerful statement from the representative of the Comptroller, Nigerian Correctional Services (NCS): "We are the goalpost of the Administration of Criminal Justice Law (ACJL) and that is why we are open to workshops that will better the stakeholders' understanding of the #ACJL. Although, implementation has (always) been a Herculean task." This candid observation highlights several crucial points: 1. The NCS recognises its pivotal role in the justice system. 2. There is a commendable openness to continuous learning and improvement, as evidenced by their willingness to participate in capacity-building workshops. 3. The acknowledgment of implementation challenges underscores the complexity of translating progressive legislation into practice. This feedback reinforces the importance of our ongoing efforts and it also emphasised the need for: - Continued capacity building across all levels of the justice system - Practical, on-the-ground support for implementation - Collaborative problem-solving to address systemic challenges What are your thoughts on the challenges of implementing the #ACJL? How can we better support our correctional services in this crucial role? #CriminalJusticeReform #ACJL #JusticeReform #CapacityBuilding

  • 📜 "The Administration of Criminal Justice Law (ACJL) is a fine but expensive law." 👆 This is what the Solicitor-General and Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Justice, Delta State, Omamuzo Erebe, said during our capacity-building workshop in Delta State recently. The Solicitor-General emphasised a critical point: the successful implementation of this law requires substantial funding. Particularly, he highlighted the urgent need for resources to build the capacity of criminal justice stakeholders in leveraging digital technology. We recognise that bridging the gap between progressive legislation and effective implementation often comes down to resources and training. The digital transformation of our criminal justice system is not just desirable – it's essential for efficiency, transparency, and access to justice. As we continue our work in Delta State and beyond, we're committed to addressing these challenges. We're exploring innovative ways to: 👉 Secure funding for digital infrastructure in the justice system 👉 Develop targeted training programs for legal professionals 👉 Collaborate with tech partners to create cost-effective solutions We believe that by investing in digital capacity, we can unlock the full potential of the Administration of Criminal Justice Law and create a more just and efficient legal system for all. Do you also think that the #ACJL is "fine in theory, but expensive in practice?" #CriminalJusticeReform #CapacityBuilding #DeltaState #ACJL

  • 🔍 Today, we conducted an assessment of the implementation of Delta State's Administration of Criminal Justice Law (ACJL). The findings reveal the following as some of the challenges that need addressing. 👇 👉Inadequate Manpower: The system is understaffed, affecting efficiency and effectiveness. 👉Lack of Digitalization: In this digital age, our criminal justice processes are falling behind, impacting speed and accuracy. 👉Brain Drain: Valuable legal expertise is being lost, potentially compromising the quality of justice delivery. #CriminalJusticeReform #DeltaState #ACJL #LegalReform

  • 📜 Law Hub Development and Advocacy Centre (Law Hub) is proud to announce a significant achievement in strengthening Nigeria's criminal justice system. In 2023, a Law Hub-facilitated stakeholders' assessment workshop in #AdamawaState revealed a critical gap: the absence of a Practice Direction for the Administration of Criminal Justice Law (ACJL) within the state's courts. This lack of guidance led to inconsistencies and inefficiencies in handling criminal cases. Law Hub worked closely with Adamawa's criminal justice stakeholders throughout January 2024. This teamwork resulted in the successful development and validation of a comprehensive #ACJL Practice Direction. Following a rigorous validation process and endorsement by the Chief Judge of Adamawa State, Hon. Justice Hapsat Abdulrahaman, Law Hub facilitated the printing of the Practice Direction, supported by MacArthur Foundation. On June 21st, 2024, we had the honour of presenting the finalised document to the Chief Judge and other key stakeholders at the Adamawa State High Court Complex. This newly established #PracticeDirection will be a game-changer for Adamawa's criminal justice system. By providing clear and consistent guidelines for the courts, it will ensure a more streamlined and equitable legal process for the state. #JusticeReform #AdamawaACJL #LegalReform

  • #MondayLegalTips Can a policeman search a female suspect? 🤔 The Administration of Criminal Justice Law (ACJL) outlines specific guidelines for searches during investigations. One important aspect is the principle of respect and dignity. The #ACJL states that searches should be conducted decently and by someone of the same sex whenever possible. However, there are exceptions. If the situation is urgent or if it's crucial for justice, the search can be carried out by someone of a different gender. This highlights the importance of balancing security and respect for individual rights within the legal framework. #ACJL #JusticeReform #LegalTips

  • Is #bail free in Bauchi State? 🤔 This was just one of the thought-provoking questions raised during our recent assessment and capacity-building workshop in Bauchi State. The workshop brought together stakeholders to discuss the implementation of the Administration of Criminal Justice Law (ACJL) in Bauchi. The assessment workshop revealed a clear need for greater awareness and understanding of the ACJL's provisions, regarding bail and other crucial aspects of the criminal justice systems. We're committed to supporting Bauchi State in strengthening its legal framework and ensuring a fair and just system for all. #ACJL #JusticeReform #CapacityBuilding
