The Africa Digital Health Summit (ADHS) 2024 drew to a close on Friday, and as a track partner Data.FI hosted a panel session focused on four key elements of #digitalhealth: policy, governance, interoperability, and standards.
The panelists emphasized that robust digital health policies are essential for ensuring privacy, security, and the ethical use of health data. During the discussion, they explored governance structures within the #USAID space that guide the conceptualization, design, and implementation of digital health services.
Rigorous #datagovernance practices protect patient information through encryption, access controls, and audit trails, ensuring confidentiality. This corroborates what we heard from the #Lagos State Commissioner for Health, Prof. Akin Abayomi, who spoke about the Lagos State Smart Health Information Platform (SHIP) and efforts by the State government to ensure better privacy and protection for patients' information and "reversing medical tourism in Nigeria."
Data.FI's session also delved into the #interoperability layers of digital solutions and highlighted data exchanges between #LAMISPlus and the National OVC Management Information System (#NOMIS), National Data Repository (NDR), Laboratory Information Management System (LIMS), and District Health Information System Version 2 (#DHIS2). That these systems share information enhances data availability and provides decision makers with real-time insights for program planning and clinical outcomes assessment.
Panelists also explored the potential of incorporating #artificialintelligence (AI), #machinelearning, and #blockchain. The session outlined the advantages and disadvantages of applying these technologies to digital health – for example AI aids diagnostics, predictive analytics, and personalized care, while blockchain ensures secure, tamper-proof health records.
Many thanks to each of the excellent panelists:
Ikechukwuka Abah (moderator, Data.FI)
Chukwuka Nwadike (USAID)
Oyindamola Alimi (HEALTH SYSTEMS CONSULT LIMITED (HSCL))
Nonye Nwanya (Data.FI)
Emeka Madubuko (Georgetown Global Health Nigeria)
And Chukwuemeka Okolo (ECEWS).
The two-day #ADHS2024 was remarkable, and we are honored to have served as a major partner for the summit. The project was recognized for its role with a plaque presented on behalf of the organizers by Lagos State Commissioner for Health, Prof. Abayomi, to Data.FI/Nigeria Country Director, Otse Ogorry.
We are profoundly grateful to Africa Digital Health Summit (ADHS), our partners, and USAID for their commitment to supporting the Data.FI Project. We will continue to invest and provide guidance in implementing unique and sustainable digital health solutions.
